Chef Kunal Kapoor keen on Nach Baliye

MasterChef India judge Kunal Kapoor is keen on donning a different hat! He wants to take part in the next season of dance reality show "Nach Baliye" with his wife, even though he has two left feet.

Kunal, who has been married for five years and has a year-old son, recently visited the set of "Nach Baliye 5" for the promotion of "MasterChef India".

He even shook a leg with actress Shilpa Shetty, along with other "MasterChef India" judges, chef Sanjeev Kapoor and chef Vikas Khanna, on "Shut up and bounce" during his visit.

"My wife Ekta Kapoor loves dancing and is extremely good at it. But when it comes to me, I find it externally challenging to even do one step in sync. Looking at the way the couples on the show, who have been non- dancers, have progressed, only for the sake of their wife, I am extremely touched," said Kunal.

"The type of bonding and understanding that the couples generate when they work together is wonderful. All the jodis have really inspired me and I will for sure take part in the next season," he added.

The "Nach Baliye 5" episode featuring Kunal will be aired on Star Plus Sunday.

Kunal comes clean on the issue and states, `My relationship is really in a very happy phase at the moment. I am a very private person and don't like to discuss my life. I will announce my marriage as and when I decide to get hitched. But it is not happening in the near future.
Luv Shuv... fared average at the box office and Kunal is yet to sign his next project. Whoever saw my film liked my work and I have received lots of endorsement offers after that,  he signs off.

Clean-shaven Kunal Kapoor claims his latest film, Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana, doesn't subscribe to the cliched portrayal of Punjabis in Hindi films. He is equally gung-ho about co-star Huma Qureshi

You've always sported a beard onscreen but you shed it for Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana.
It felt good. It was like someone just took a mask off my face. In the past, wanted me to sport a beard for the roles. This time, I knew the director well and the role demanded a clean-shaven look. Punjabi boys, who go abroad, are usually clean-shaven and sport a goatee.

What is the film's USP? 
My director and I stayed in Punjab before we shot for this film; our writers are from Punjab, so we have successfully avoided the cliched portrayal of Punjabis. I call it a Kashraj film, a mixture of Anurag Kashyap and Yash Raj Films.
Your co-star in the film, Huma Qureshi, is just one film old.
She is very talented. This is her second film after Gangs Of Wasseypur. It's remarkable that she has played two very different characters in spite of starting off recently. We had a workshop prior to the shoot of the film, so that made the job easier.

Do you cook? 
I cook 'bachelor-style'. I can cook noodles, boil eggs, make French fries. Nothing more (laughs). I am not a cook, and that is evident in the film also.

Are you satisfied with your career? 
I am happy with the way things are moving. I am sure Luv Shuv... will connect with audiences. People now accept smaller budgets films, too.
You do few films. But in showbiz, out of sight can translate to out of mind.
The audience does have a short memory and yes, out of sight is out of mind, but I would rather do good films, than do bad films just to stay in sight. One of the best things about being an actor is that you play different characters in just one life. I want to make optimum use of that.

A lead in Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana or a supporting role in Don? 
My character should be interesting; lead or supporting is secondary. I should feel good about doing the role.

You have expressed a desire to be a director. Having worked with Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Ranbir Kapoor, who will you cast in your directorial venture? 
I will cast myself. The script will have to be brilliant for me to take it up for direction. It will match my criteria as an actor, too. So first and foremost, I will cast myself; I am a very selfish actor.
What about Luv Shuv... in your own life? 
I am in a happy space in my love life. But I am not too happy speaking about it.

Movie Review: Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana is delicious

It looks like in 2012, Anurag Kashyap's production house AKFPL is blessed with a boon of unveiling some of the memorable flick one after the other. Be it " Ganga of Wasseypur I and II", "Chittagong" or the newest delight on Anurag's entertainment salver i. e. Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana. 

This "Slice of Life" directed by Sameer Sharma (who has also made his directional debut with Luv Shuv Tey Chicvken Khurana), featuring a brigade of talented artists like Kunal Kapoor, Huma Qureshi, Rajesh Sharma et al opened with an occupancy of around 28% at the multiplexes. 

"Slice of Life" is one such budding genre of Bollywood, which is seen decorated with cine flicks, which at times inspite of being commercial let downs, succeed in leaving their impact and escalate in to the elite category of lovable cine cantatas. And because of its magnificently well brewed ingredients Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana deserves to be in that league of movies. 

Synopsis:
In ancient India (and in some cases even today), some of the skilled communities use to prefer trickling down their trade skills, only to their descendants, in order to keep it confidential to the family. 

So with its roots embedded in quite a similar tradition, Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana is a perfect cine cantata which showcases the tale of a UK returned free spirited grandson, an elderly patriarch grandfather and his yummilicious cooking recipe which he never shared with anyone and their rendezvous with life. 

Story: 
With in no time from start, Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana gets down to business and as the story takes off it showcases a free spirited guy, Omi (Kunal Kapoor) residing in London, who owes a debt of 50,000 pounds to a mafia goon Shenty (Munish Makhija), who imposes a compulsive return to India on Omi in order to manage the money that he owes to him. Clad in the blanket of hopes, of managing money from his patriarchal Dhaba which own a good repute all across Punjab, Omi returns to his native village Lalton, Punjab. 
But on reaching there he realises that, as compared to the time when he absconded from his home at a very young age, after sacking a hefty amount, things have deteriorated now and his lovable Darji (Vinod Nagpal), too have slipped into dementia but inspite of that has a fixation to his Dhaba and its much adored dish "Chicken Khurana". 

On his return Omi comes across a warm and emotional reception by his cousin Jeet (Rahul Bagga), Aunty (Seema Kaushal) a suspecting Uncle (Rajinder Sethi) and also meets a highly eccentric character, Titu Mama (Rajesh Sharma), who reside in his grandfather's house. As the frames move ahead, steps in Omi's childhood love Harman (Huma Qureshi), whom Omi left behind while absconding during his adulthood. 

As the story rolls ahead comes in a flurry of humor, emotions and commitments ultimately leading to a touching climax. So did Omi succeeds in regaining the lost glory of Chicken Khuran and pays back the debt that he owes or returns back to UK. 

Script:
Unlike the script of those hang bang cine flicks, which have a premise rooted in the Punjabi culture and showcases the same in the shades of larger than life colors. Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana has got a simple and near to life premise, which very well portrays the Punjabi legacy through the lenses of reality and simplicity. 

Script of Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana is so well knitted that it leaves no scope for any kind of melodrama or inflated expression of emotions. And it's because of the neat and uncomplicated drafting of the script, that every artist comfortably slips under the skin of its character with quite an ease and thoroughly succeeds in delivering an outstanding performances. 
There are very few stories which inspite of being highly predictable, succeeds in keeping audience attention glued to the screen, and undoubtedly, Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana is surely one of those stories which keeps on tickling your curiosity instinct. 

As far as dialogues are concerned then onscreen loquaciousness of characters also compels you to associate with them, because of their simplicity. Even the quick witted and spontaneous humor sans gaucherie is good enough to bring smiles on your face. 

Screenplay: 
Though at times flow of the narration of Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana seems slowing down, but otherwise, since frame one the movie thoroughly keeps you captivated within the confines of its mesmerising charm. About Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana, it won't be wrong to say that, it's simply the marvellous execution of the script, which keeps on pampering the entertainment hungry bud of the masses. 

In the second half, for a while one may find onscreen proceedings to be dragging, but inspite of that it nowhere mar the over all flow of the narration. 

As far as the direction of Sameer Sharma is concerned then there is just one word to describe it and i. e. Outstanding. After seeing the excellence with which Sameer has brewed the common man humor, familial legacy and culture, one thing is for sure that he masters the art of making an entertaining cine cantata. 

Music:
Inspite of the absence of those obtruded peppy Punjabi tracks (as it is seen in various cine flicks having Punabi legacy at their roots), the music and lyrics of Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana are soothing aural delights. Just like other components, even the the music and lyrics of the movie elegantly carries the soul of the movie. 
Performances:
It won't be wrong to say that while performing their characters in Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana each and every member of the cast was at his best. Be it the main lead or the supporting cast, each and every protagonist has thoroughly proved his or her acting adroitness with utmost excellence, hence making it a tough choice to pick any one as the best. 

Though Kunal carried his character with utmost dexterity, but inspite of that this can't one can't be counted as one of the best performance of this otherwise highly talented actor. 

Just like her GOW stint Huma again is an absolute delight to watch in a Punjabi Kudi avatar. In Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana, Huma once again proved that she owns the potential to do justice to any and every kind of character offered to her. 

Inspite of having nothing much to say, Vinod Nagpal thoroughly succeeds in tickling your ribs by his cute acts of senile innocence. But the man who thoroughly steals the show is Rajesh Sharma who is seen playing an eccentric character. 

Infact it won't be wrong to say that despite being part of supporting cast, Rajesh's mere appearance on the celluloid and his spontaneous and quick witted comedy punches overshadowed everything else. 

Dolly Ahluwalia in dhongi bua avatar is too good. And besides this Rajinder Sethi, Seema Kaushal and Rahul Bagga too succeeds in doing a thorough justice to their respective roles. 
BO Potential:
Because of the absence of glittery star cast Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana may not succeed in emerging as a Commercial miracle but, inspite of that the movie is expected to recover its cost of production at BO and will be widely liked by the audience of all age groups. 

Verdict: 
To sum up, Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana is an exquisite dish which will deliciously quell your entertainment hunger.

The first Friday of November offers a melange of movies ranging from drama to comedy, horror to musical, for the audience. 

"Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana", "1920: Evil Returns", "Future To Bright Hai Ji", "Ata Pata Laapata", "Sons of Ram", "Main Krishna Hoon" and "Le Gaya Saddam" - all hit the screens Friday.

All are bound by a common string - a small budget, but the ones which have had a good buzz around them are Kunal Kapoor-starrer "Luv Shuv..." and Vikram Bhatt's "1920: Evil Returns".

Co-produced by Ronnie Screwvala, Siddharth Roy Kapur and Anurag Kashyap, "Luv Shuv..." celebrates the lovable quirks of a Punjabi joint family. It revolves around a secret recipe for a famous chicken curry 'Chicken Khurana', which forms the plot's crux. 

Also featuring actors Huma Qureshi and Rajesh Sharma, the film is Sameer Sharma's directorial debut. 

If "Luv Shuv..." promises to take the audience on a laughter ride, there is "1920: Evil Returns", which could give goosebumps. 

Directed by Bhushan Patel, the story of the supernatural thriller revolves around Jaidev Verma, played by Aftab Shivdasani. He portrays a famous poet who lives the life of a loner as he is unable to meet the love of his life. He stays with his sister Karuna (Vidya Malvade), who is his support system until he meets Smruti (Tia Bajpai). 

The next option on the big screen is "Ata Pata Laapata", a musical satire attempts to expose the selfish attitude of people in power. The film is the directorial debut of actor Rajpal Yadav and features him alongside Asrani, Ashutosh Rana, Vijay Raaz, Vikram Gokhale and late actor Dara Singh. 
"Future To Bright Hai Ji" encapsulates the misfortunes of a lower-middle class family with big aspirations. It features actors Aamir Bashir, Sonal Sehgal, Satish Kaushik, Asrani and Neelima Azim.

Among the eclectic mix is "Le Gaya Saddam", based on the Muslim divorce system.

Directed and produced by Amjad Khan, the movie has actor Raghubir Yadav playing the lead role of a loving and caring grandfather named Saddam.

There's also something for kids this week - "Main Krishna Hoon", featuring actress Juhi Chawla, is the story of an orphan boy, Krishna, who is unhappy being alone in an orphanage. Juhi plays the owner of the orphanage. The film also has Katrina Kaif, Hrithik Roshan and Rajneesh Duggal in cameos. 

The week offers some animation too - 3D animated film "Sons of Ram", is a contemporary tale of brotherhood, courage and adventure, set in the backdrop of the epic Ramayana. The film narrates Luv and Kush's journey through enchanted forests into the revered land of Ayodhya.

The film is directed and written by Kushal Ruia. Popular singer Sunidhi Chauhan has lent her voice for the character of Sita. The film will release in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

Kunal Kapoor's Luv Shuv and Jalebi-phobia!

The actor has developed a phobia of jalebis thanks to his role in his film 'Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana' 

Chances are that anybody with a sweet tooth would love to gorge on jalebis. Unless you are Kunal Kapoor! The actor who otherwise loves to indulge in sweets has developed an aversion towards this juicy preparation. And this has something to do with overeating a whole lot of them during a specific scene in his forthcoming film. 

According to a well-placed source, the scene required him to gobble down jalebis but the seemingly pleasant shooting schedule slowly turned into a nightmare. Due to some reason or the other, the shots weren't up- to-mark.

As the result, they took so many retakes that Kunal had more than three-dozen jalebis back-to-back! Although it's quite obvious that he love sweets, it was beyond healthy means. He even declared that he won't be having jalebis ever again, adds the source.
Kunal confirms the news but quips that eating them was part of his job. The crazy thing about a food film is the amount of food you end up eating, take after take.

In my case, I along with my co-star Rajesh Sharma wiped out about 40 jalebis. I can safely say that I've developed a disorder now. I call it jalebi-phobia! I don't even want to look at a jalebi for at least a year to get over its taste, Kunal laughs.

Kunal Kapoor to direct soon

Actor Kunal Kapoor, who had assisted filmmaker Rakesh Omprakash Mehra in "Aks", plans to direct a short film soon.

"I would like to direct a short film in the near future. I find short films very interesting. So, yes, short film is something that I would love to do. But not the whole feature film right now," Kunal told.

Asked about the subject of his short film, he replied, "There are a lot of ideas in my mind right now. I have an idea almost every day, but I have to develop the subject."

As an actor he wants to stick to commercial films.

"Obviously commercial success matters a lot to me. There is no two ways about it. I think as an actor, the most important thing is that your film should reach out to as many people as possible. If there is a choice between being critically acclaimed and commercial success, then I would chose commercial success."

"I want to be part of stories that can reach out to as many people as possible," he added.

Kunal is currently gearing up for "Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana" release. Made by director Sameer Sharma, it is slated for a Nov 2 release.

Meet Kunal, Huma's love guru

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap gave love tips to Kunal Kapoor and Huma Qureshi while picturising an intimate scene with them in "Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana".

Kashyap says that the film is about food as well as true romance. 

" Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana is what I call 'a romance'. It's about romanticising about Chicken Khurana and the hunt for the missing recipe and it also has a sweet and endearing romance between Huma's character and Kunal's character," Kashyap, who has co-produced the film, said in a statement.
"Simplicity of it will touch the hearts of many. So, through the film and its promotions we are not just talking about food and tips to making good food, we are also talking about how a true romance should be," he added. 

Directed by Sameer Sharma, the film is a funny story about a Punjabi family - the Khuranas. They run a dhaba and take pride in their food, especially their patent Chicken recipe.

The movie is set for a Nov 2 release.

Never planned to do supporting roles in big films: Kunal Kapoor

Actor Kunal Kapoor, who has been a part of movies like 'Rang De Basanti' and 'Don 2', says he never planned to do supporting roles in big films

'The roles that I have done so far are distinctively different from each other, that was more important for me. It was not that I had planned doing supporting roles in big films and then move on to big roles.

'The criteria for doing a film is whether the script and people that I am working with are interesting or not. Whatever work I have done till now, I have had the chance to work with interesting people in good films, ' Kunal told.

Kunal is now looking forward to the release of his upcoming film 'Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana'. 'I think every film is a risk. It is a very interesting and exciting time that we are living in as the audience is accepting all kinds of films. Small films are doing well today. I don't think there is any better time to take risks than now. If you are not taking risks then you end up doing boring work, ' he said.

'Luv Shuv...' is about a Punjabi family, the Khuranas, who run a dhaba and take pride in their food, especially the family recipe Chicken Khurana. 'It is not a typical comedy. In 70s and 80s, Hrishikesh Mukherjee used to make films where humour used to come from situations, characters and the story. Our attempt is to do that again, ' he said.

Kunal plays the role of a Punjabi boy in the movie opposite Huma Qureshi of 'Gangs of Wasseypur' fame. The film will hit theatres on November 2.

Huma surprised him with a birthday cake.

Travelling through Punjab for his forthcoming film "Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana" has perhaps tempted actor Kunal Kapoor to think of stepping into the business of food.

"Punjab is a place of nostalgia for me. Having been in Mumbai all through my life, I got the taste and feel of my roots, the real Punjab while shooting for 'Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana'," said Kunal.

"I had some amazing food while shooting for our film, which incidentally happens to be Bollywood's first ever food film. It will be great to do something with the rich Punjabi cuisine culture," he added.

The movie, releasing Nov 2, revolves around a popular Chicken Khurana recipe.

Luv Shuv Tey... falls in gentle comedy genre: Kashyap

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap says that his upcoming production "Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana" reminded him of Hrishikesh Mukherjee kind of cinema, which is no longer made.

"After a long time I read a script which I found was in a zone that we no longer remember. You see 'Little Miss Sunshine', 'Juno', then there were Basu Chatterjee and Hrishikesh Mukherjee films, this is like those gentle comedies," the 40-year-told reporters at an event here.

"People have stopped writing such films and somewhere I got a similar feel from the film," he added.

The film revolves around the hunt for a secret recipe - Chicken Khurana - that had made the Khurana Dhaba famous.

Lead actor of the film Kunal Kapoor says that the dish is used as a metaphor in the film.

"The name is Chicken Khurana but it could have been Paneer Khurana or Aaloo Khurana, the dish is not important. What is more important is what the dish represents," Kunal said.

"It is a metaphor for many things in the film, be it romance or family, there are a lot of things that the dish connects to," he added.

Directed by Sameer Sharma, "Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana" also stars Huma Qureshi and is slated for a Nov 2 release.

Size does not matter, says Kunal

If a role is challenging enough, its length does not matter to Kunal Kapoor.

"Honestly, I have never looked at a film as a multi-starrer, solo film, cameo or anything. For me, if the role is interesting, I want to do it, it doesn't matter what bracket which falls into, " Kunal told.

For, Kunal acting like road to discovery

Actor Kunal Kapoor wants to explore and learn through the roles he takes up in Bollywood.

"I am looking for different kind of roles. For example, I did a film called 'Lamhaa', which was shot in Kashmir. For me, that was educative. For a person who has grown up in Mumbai, one doesn't get to understand the politics of Kashmir, unless you get the opportunity to discover that, " Kunal told.

"For me, it is important to discover new worlds and mindsets and new point of views and this is what I look for as an actor, " he added.

Right scripts have not been coming my way: Kunal Kapoor

Kunal Kapoor made his debut eight years ago in "Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities", but he has done only about a dozen films so far. The actor is moving at a slow pace because he is looking for a unique combination in scripts that is not easily available.

"Unfortunately the right scripts have not been coming my way. I feel it is better not to be seen than to be seen in films I don't believe in. So even if I am doing little work, it's fine," said the acotr, who has been a part of films like "Rang De Basanti" and "Lamhaa".

His kind of films should be entertaining, but with a level of sensibility in the script. One of the directors, according to Kunal, who has achieved that is Rajkumar Hirani.

"I want to be involved with different movies, but it is important for me that the movie has a message and a certain sensibility. Nowadays, people feel entertainment means mindless fun. For me, it is important to entertain (through my movies) and have some sense in it as well," said Kunal.

"Rajkumar Hirani is one director who does it well. Also, films like 'Rang De Basanti', 'Chak De! India' proved that a film can have sensibility and at the same time can be entertaining. These are the films which I look for," he added.

The 34-year-old is now eagerly looking forward to the release of "Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana" and calls it one of his challenging films.

"There is a trap in playing a role like this. There is a chance of making it over the top because I am playing a Punjabi character. The challenge for us was to make him normal and also to show him as a guy who is lost and trying to find his way back. So keeping it subtle was a challenge for me," he said.

The film, produced by Anurag Kashyap, features Huma Qureshi as the female lead. Directed by Sameer Sharma, the film releases Nov 2.

Kunal likes to be involved in his films from the inception level and his new film "Luv Shuv..." was no different.

"Even in 'Luv Shuv...' me and the director got together and wrote the story. It was an idea which came out of the conversations which we had," Kunal told in an interview.

"For me, it is important that I am involved in a film right from the inception. So, I am writing some stuff with people, who I would really like to work with," he added.

Luv Shuv... gets U/A certificate

"Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana" has received a U/A certificate from the censor board. Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, the movie's creative producer, hopes his first attempt at a family entertainer rings a bell with the audience.

Kashyap is known for his serious and offbeat films like "Black Friday", "No Smoking", "Dev D" and "Gulaal".

"It is the for the first time that I have tried my hand at making a complete family entertainer and I have had fun in the process. It's India's first food film and has all the ingredients for a delicious comedy, " Kashyap said in a statement.

His primary focus was not to make "Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana" a masala film, but reach out beyond his usual audience.

Starring Kunal Kapoor and Huma Qureshi, the film is a funny story about a Punjabi family - the Khuranas. They run a dhaba and take pride in their food, especially the family recipe of Chicken Khurana.

But unfortunately, it gets lost when the patriarch, played by Vinod Nagpal, loses his memory and with that, the secret recipe too. The family looks for a copy of the recipe and also tries to cook it in various permutations and combinations to get the exact taste.

The movie is set for release Nov 2.

First Look: Huma Qureshi and Kunal Kapoor's Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana

Kunal Kapoor and Huma Qureshi-starrer "Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana" is set to hit theatres Nov 2.

The film, directed by debutant Sameer Sharma, celebrates the lovable quirks of a Punjabi joint family with its inherent humour, drama, confusion, emotion, and the secret recipe for the famous chicken curry 'Chicken Khurana'.

The music of the film has been given by Amit Trivedi and it has been co-produced by UTV Spotboy and Anurag Kashyap.
