Katrina still remembers the day Big B helped her

The Bachchan bahu, Aishwarya Rai, and Katrina Kaif might not be sharing great vibes but not many know that Amitabh had helped Kat during her first film, Kaizad Gustad's Boom.

Katrina recently met Big B at the GQ awards in Mumbai. "Katrina stabbed a 'hey it's me' finger on my shoulder and we recollected the old times," Bachchan writes in his blog entry.

"The time of her very first film, Boom, and how, as a shy reticent girl, she had been bullied by the director not to ever look (at herself) in the monitor," the superstar says.

He added how Kat was "new and uncertain like most of us, but was keen to see what she looked like on screen".

"I thought it was a most natural and common desire and one that should have been allowed by the director...

I had dragged her to the monitor and given her the first look of what she looked like. To her credit, she still remembers that moment," he writes.

Interestingly, Katrina was also denied entry at a club in Dubai as she was thought to be underage. "I recollect the embarrassment she and all of us faced when she was stopped from going inside a club because the man ( at) the door thought her to be underage," Bachchan adds. "And now, from a small insignificant part in Sarkar to the most googled and popular star in the firmament, Ms Kaif has come such a long way in such a short time," Big B says.

And when pack-up was announced, Kareena would often go shopping. Once, Salman accompanied her to carry the bags!

At one particular store, Bebo went on a shopping spree, picking up things for friends, family and herself.

When she went to settle the bill, she was zapped to be told her that it was already paid. Seeing Salman grinning from ear-to-ear, Kareena realised who her benefactor was. Blue promises never-seen-before visuals and stunts

Akshay Kumar says when “Blue” director Anthony D’Souza approached him for the underwater thriller, the first thing he asked him was “Are you capable of making the movie?”.

Touted to be India’s first underwater film, which is said to match international standards of filmmaking, “Blue” promises to bring with it some never-seen-before visuals and stunts.

“The first thing I did was to look straight into his eyes and ask him - ‘Do you actually think you are capable enough of making a film of this scale, genre and setting?

You may say that you want to shoot the film in space or on the moon, but saying something and doing it are two different things.

So how will you actually shoot the film?.” As things turned out, D’Souza had done his homework well in advance and showed some of his work from.

The past, which included certain advertisements he had directed as well as some groundwork on “Blue”.

“Honestly, it all led me to at least start lending an ear to him. I became further interested in knowing how he was going to execute ‘Blue’,” Akshay told IANS. “After all there were going to be extreme stunts in it and that too under water. Then Tony (D’Souza) also showed me the work of the DOP (director of photography) Pete Zuccarini.

“He is the same guy who has also shot ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’. He even made me talk to him and once I did that, I was quite satisfied that at least Tony had his heart in the right place and he had done his homework well.” Once on board, Akshay wasn’t too worried about the fact that a film like “Blue” had never been attempted before on the Indian screen.

“I am sure that it would be legendary in its own way. Let’s see how the box office treats, but while doing the film we went all out for ‘Blue’. Making a film like this is no joke in any case. “With the backdrop of a treasure hunt to it, it involves real sharks and all. I had to go through some training, take diving lessons and earn a certificate for myself because without that you are not allowed to enter sea.”

But that’s not all. Akshay had to get back to reading after years — but this time under water. “Can you beat that? I had to read books around underwater. Tony made me do so much for this film. It was further hard work because there are minimal special effects. In fact, not a single shot has been taken against a green screen.

“My cameraman, Peter Zuccarini, who is famous for underwater swimming, also helped me a lot. I thought I knew swimming so it would be easy but this man taught me how to ‘belong’ to underwater. That’s the kind of encouragement I was looking for.” Also starring Sanjay Dutt, Lara Dutta and Zayed Khan along with Katrina Kaif and Kylie Minogue, “Blue” is produced by Dhillin Mehta and has music by A.R. Rahman. It is set to release Oct 16.

Filmmaker Karan Johar has hinted signing on Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif for his next movie.

The director was quoted by a news channel saying that Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif are the most romantic actors in Bollywood.

When he was further asked whether he would like to pair them up, the filmmaker didn't weed out the possibility.

Katrina Kaif and Shah Rukh Khan are also said to be working together in a Yash Chopra movie. If this happens.

It might as well be the end of cold war between Sallu and SRK. Salman is already throwing hints regarding the patch-up.

He praised King Khan on his show Dus Ka Dum, saying he has high regards for the actor professionally.

Also, Salman said in an interview once that he won't have any problem if Katrina works with Shah Rukh. Well, we also want your war to be a history Khans!

Bollywood's beautiful Twitter queen, Mallika Sherawat - Exclusive interview

I wrote recently about Mallika Sherawat, currently regarded by many as the hottest actress in Bollywood, and her role in the new Jennifer Lynch movie Hisss.

She is responsible for many Bollywood fans taking to Twitter (Mallika's Twitter virgins!). Mallika revealed some of her Twitter secrets such as who her best Twitter friend is and also talked about serious issues such as racism.

In the US and the Shah Rukh incidentWho are you closest to in your family ? Who is your boyfriend ? Best friend ? Best Twitter friend ? Who do you admire ?

I have a brother, Vikram, who is also one of my best friends, and he manages most of my work that I don't.

(I just like being the creative one;) I also tied a rakhi around an American bro this year, he's a good friend and has really helped navigate the Hollywood scene which is alot like Bollywood in some ways, and *very* different in others.

My best Twitter friend is probably @JesseBDylan, we DM (direct message) each other alot. In fact, I think he actually decided to develop the project for me while "tweeting" each other! [(Jesse is Bob Dylan's son and director of "Kicking and Screaming" with Will Ferrell and Robert Duvall, "American Wedding", and "How High") is developing a project for her, specifically for the US market)

I guess my best "public" Twitter friend goes by the name of RagsTweets, he started a whole blog about my tweets and contests and all sorts of stuff, and he's a really cool guy. And my biggest Twitter fan has to be @chandu4M, he's been that for years and Twitter made it possible to get to know the guy a bit
and he's such a sweetheart.

I admire so many people, in many different fields, East and West-- but I'll keep it short. As far as actresses past and present: Bette Davis, Mae West, Barbara Stanwyck, Shirley MacLaine, Meryl Streep, and my fellow exotic contemporaries Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek. AR Rahman.

"Civilians" (non-Entertainment industry people) like Gandhi and the Yogis:) Who is the Bollywood actor she has a crush on ? Hollywood actor ? Haha, a lady never tells! And I wouldn't want any of the others to get jealous;)Let's put it this way, if I were doing a blockbuster crowd-pleaser it would be with SRK, an epic style classic with Aamir Khan, a sexy drama with Hrithik Roshan and a gangster comedy with Sallu! And the guys more my age like Imran Khan, Shahid Kapoor are really doing great, I'm loving their films. In America, there's many guys I'd love to work with, especially Edward Norton, I think he's a brilliant actor.

Lots of women want to look as good as you do. Do you have any make up or diet tips for your fans ? I go all organic vegetarian, lot of fruits and water! I workout daily, the usual "star" stuff:) I get plenty of sleep, I think that helps, too. And I never go outside without my parasol to lessen the sun rays to the skin.

Yes, my friends make fun of me but I know it works, and what works on camera works for me:) As far as makeup, I've started switching it up a bit, experimenting with more products I found on Rodeo Drive;) Was Shah Rukh Khan discriminated against ? Or were the airport staff just doing their job ? What do you think ?

If I had a good role for every time I was stopped and frisked at an international airport, there'd be no actresses left in both Bollywood and Hollywood! Now, it may be for different reasons they frisk me than
they do SRK;) but every culture does the airport security thing the way they feel they have to, and sometimes it may feel unfair in the moment, but in the end I think it's more common as an annoyance than outright discrimination. I know someone who talked to SRK when it happened. My friend said he was very cool about it.

The press went wild with it because that's what they do. Here's the biggest star in the world, who happens to be of a Muslim background, held up in an American airport right after 20th Century Fox announced all over the world that it would be distributing his terrorist-themed comedy movie! Priceless. You are like many of us - both Westernized and Indian, and spending time abroad and in India. Do you have difficulty reconciling the two?

Both cultures have so much good to borrow from, I'm finding it almost natural to live in both worlds at the same time. I guess I'm a real global gal now:) There are of course differences that come up and maybe make things a little more "interesting"-- but I have fun trying to find the common ground. Because of this, I've been told that I'm a good go-between for Bollywood and Hollywood.

I grew up in Bollywood, and always loved Hollywood films, especially the classics during the "Golden Age." And as a little girl watching Bollywood films, I always thought that it would be much more fun and interesting to play the hero's part! Maybe that's why I've gotten the reputation in India for being "edgy" and outrageous. And I'll be completely honest, Hollywood has better roles for women than Bollywood does, at least right now.

Tell us about your school and college days - where did you go to school and what was it like ? I have a degree in Philosophy from Miranda House in Delhi. Looking back, I was so serious in school. If I had to do it all over again, maybe I would have tried out some other subjects instead of being buried in philosophy books the whole time. Then again, I guess it made me who I am, and I'm feeling pretty okay with myself. There's always room for improvement, but I definitely feel I'm headed in the right direction.

Bipasha groped during Durga puja

The actress was so furious that she had to be whisked away by John Abraham, who had accompanied her for Durga Puja celebrations.

When Bipasha Basu, a true-blue Bengali decided to take part in the on-going Durga Puja festivities with boyfriend John Abraham, the last thing she expected was to be sexually groped by a sick minded stranger.

The actress had a horrifying time when she was at The North Bombay Sarvojonin Durga Puja at Santacruz on Saturday evening.

Not one to take things lying down, Bipasha was furious when John took her away from the scene. Incidentally, this Durga Puja pandal is now being managed by Rani Mukerji’s family.

Commenting on what exactly happened, a source present at the event said, “Bipasha and John came together for the Durga Puja.

In the evening and Bipasha was very excited as has always been part of Durga Pujas in Mumbai over the years. Just after the darshan, she was near the stage when someone pervert groped her breasts.

Bipasha, of course, was taken aback and flew into a fit of rage. People around her tried to calm her down. John too was present there and he whisked her away to calm her down.

She even wanted to lodge a police complaint. However, she had second thoughts. As for the sick man, he quietly and promptly ran away, taking advantage of the commotion.” Despite repeated attempts, John and Bipasha remained unavailable for comment.

I find SRK extremely fascinating - Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka Chopra has thousands of fans, but who is the actress's all-time idol? The man she admires most is adored by millions across the globe as well...

who else but superstar Shah Rukh Khan."Shah Rukh Khan is my idol and has always been. He has been a favourite actor of course, but I really look up to him also as a person.

Looking at where he came from and how he became who he is today, I find it extremely fascinating," Priyanka told in an interview."

He started with theatre, did plays, got a break in TV - he turned from a regular college kid to a mega superstar... and all that completely on his own with no help from anybody in the film industry.

I admire a lot about him and I think it's just fantastic," said the actress who has bagged the youth award icon for entertainment. In the past, Priyanka has teamed up with Shah Rukh for Farhan Akhtar's.

"Don" and did a cameo in a song with him in Farah Khan's "Om Shanti Om" and also in "Billu". Priyanka and Hrithik Roshan bagged the youth icon awards in the entertainment field at the inaugural edition of the India Youth Icon Awards at an awards ceremony in Gurgaon Friday.

The actress is currently on cloud nine after getting rave reviews for essaying 12 roles in Ashutosh Gowariker's "What's Your Rashee?", which also stars Hurman Baweja."It's been great feedback so far. People are enjoying the film...

I had an author-backed role which included playing 12 different characters - very difficult to do. And it feels fantastic to be encouraged and be told that I pulled it off well," she said. The 27-year-old actor said she was extremely nervous before the film's release Friday.

"My biggest worry was - 'Oh God! Will I ever be able to pull this off or not?'. Since most people who get to play multiple roles in a movie get it after a lot of experience, I was nervous. I have spent a short span to do roles as difficult as the one in 'What's Your Rashee', but as an actor all I can say is that I do my work with as much honesty as possible and the rest is destiny," she said.

If "What's Your Rashee?" hits the jackpot at the box office, it will be her fourth consecutive hit in a row after "Fashion", "Dostana" and "Kaminey".But she is unmoved. "Hits and flops are a part of the business, isn't it?" she said.

Asked how she handles success at a young age, the former Miss World said: "I have always been grounded. I have an incredible passion for what I do (acting). I don't know how to do anything else, I don't want to do anything else and I love what I do. There's nothing else that affects me."

What about growing expectations from audiences and critics? "It scares me when my films release. I wonder if people will like it or not. That for me is the most important thing. But at the same time I think: what's the point of living a life without any expectations? You will just stagnate, become complacent - that's not the kind of person I am. I like striving, I like things that challenge me; I take up difficult films and difficult roles to challenge myself," Priyanka said.

"I like it when people say things like 'Fashion' was a female-centric movie and yet it was successful and that 'Kaminey' was an all-boys film, still my part was really appreciated, and 'Dostana' was majorly on gay guys, and it ended so well.

I enjoy that - I like the fact that I can take up different scripts. It's just that I like to take up challenges," she added.Priyanka's next will see her paired with Uday Chopra in Yash Raj Films' "Pyaar Impossible", where she will play the beauty and the latter a geek.

As a Muslim I feel proud I did 'Kurbaan'- Saif Ali Khan

His 'Love Aaj Kal' has completed 50 days at the box office and has earned more than Rs.65 crores (Rs.650 million) just within India.

Now actor-producer Saif Ali Khan is looking forward to 'Kurbaan' - a film he admits he is proud of having acted in being a Muslim.

'As a Muslim I feel proud of the fact that I have done this film. This is one of the most socially relevant films today.

It is good that it is coming at just the time when our country needs cinema like this,' Saif told IANS in an interview.

Set in the US, 'Kurbaan' is a romantic thriller with terrorism as its backdrop. A Karan Johar production directed by debutant Rensil D'Silva, 'Kurbaan' also stars Kareena Kapoor, Vivek Oberoi, Dia Mirza, Kirron Kher and Om Puri. It is slated to release Nov 27.

Saif reveals that he now has a new career plan in place. 'I would now be working on two-three films a year and make sure that I cover a wide spectrum. While a couple of them would be big, nice commercial films, another would be a relatively smaller film that can be completed in 30 days flat.'

After 'Love Aaj Kal', his next production venture is 'Agent Vinod'. But shooting for the film is still a little distance away. 'Final touches on the script are being given and we have been looking at getting the best technicians on board. I guess by the end of this year, we should begin shooting.

'In any case I am in no tearing hurry to ready my next film. One should space things out, invest good time to publicise things and get the right preparation in place for the making of the film,' said Saif. He is also careful that his personal life, especially his health, doesn't suffer due to his professional commitments.

'It is of paramount importance that one looks after the body as well as brain. I go to the gym regularly as well as spend some good time with family. As far as work is concerned, I have certainly become even more serious about production after 'Love Aaj Kal'. 'We have learnt quite some lessons after the release of our first film and the idea is to leverage from some mistakes that we may have made. My investment as a producer is bound to increase from here on.'

Meanwhile, the success of 'Love Aaj Kal' and 'Race' (2008) have made it closer for him to the top-five league. While Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan and Salman Khan are firmly placed in the top league, Saif too is not that far away.

'I don't know much about that. All such number placements are for other people to state, study and analyse. As for me, I know today that I'm in a position to make the film that I want to make. I am also confident that the film I would make will carry some meaning to people. My project should now carry certain amount of weight and direction and for that one has to be a bankable star.'

He continues to shrug away the entire numbers game. 'This number business is quite fluctuating actually; so one should not be worried about it. What you should worry about more is that now since people have higher expectations from you, you should deliver even better in your next assignments,' Saif said.

Sonam Kapoor adores Nutan and Waheeda Rehman

She's a style icon already as far as the younger crop of stars are concerned, but Anil Kapoor's pretty daughter Sonam Kapoor says her own idea of classic beauty with brains is defined by the divas of yore.

"I simply adore Waheeda Rehman. From her acting to her choice of films it needed guts to choose movies like Pyaasa or Guide she went ahead with it.

I thought Guide was a very bold movie. Rosie has shades of grey, and her character is not the clean and traditional Bollywood heroine that was the norm then," she told After Hrs.

"I'm also very inspired by Nutan. I love her for her work in Bandini and Saraswatichandra.

Both have looked good and done path-breaking films. I love their quality of doing different things. They stood out as actors who are not just beautiful faces."

While Sonam herself may still be looking to make a definitive mark for herself in films, her sense of style has already won the approval of her peers and industry watchers. What's her secret? "I don't follow the herd and I have my own style fundas which I stick by. I think it's that which makes me stand out," says the Masakali girl.

Sonam has some advice for people who like her sense of dressing. "Just try to be yourself and don't copy anyone. It is individual style that grabs attention. I guess I'm very confident in any outfit I wear and that comes through. But the bottom line is that I love clothes," she says.

Despite her confidence, Sonam admits that getting into the skin of the character she plays in her forthcoming project Aisha has proved to be a big challenge for her. "I have gone through two months of intensive workshop with my acting coach Jayati Bhatia. The character of Aisha, inspired from Emma in Atonement, is not like me at all. I'm slightly nervous."

But music, she feels, is the key to getting it right. "I listen to the background score of Atonement to put me into the groove of the character. I'm a great fan of Red Hot Chili Peppers and Pink Floyd, but for this one I'm listening to some Lady Gaga and Beyonce," she ends.

Stammering made my childhood hell - Hrithik

He is a Bollywood superstar and is known for his impressive dialogue delivery but it is hard to believe that actor Hrithik Roshan's childhood was traumatized because of stammering, a problem which plagues him even today.

The actor, who acquired the heartthrob status overnight with his debut-hit 'Kaho Na Pyaar Hain', revealed that the defect surfaced when he was around six years old.

"Everything seems normal till you start talking. The minute you start talking, you get stuck and you don't know why?

Right from your toes to the ends of your hair strands, you are in complete shock. Your heart palpitates, you don't understand and you are aware of people looking at you. You can compare it to hell," Hrithik said.

Recalling his school days on director Farah Khan's celebrity chat show 'Tere Mere Beach Mein', to be broadcast this Saturday on Star Plus, the 35-year-old said his childhood turned hell after his classmates began teasing him.

"Unfortunately, it's one of those handicaps that is made fun of. Especially kids, you can't blame them but they end up being mean because it looks funny. So the childhood of a person suffering from a problem like this is pure hell... you have to go through all those little moments of hell," the actor said. Attending oral examinations was the most dreaded one for the heartthrob, who played a superhero in the 2006 blockbuster 'Krrish'.

"For oral tests at school, I used to bunk school, I used to fall sick, I used to break my hand, I used to get a sprain." When asked how long the speech defect has bothered him, Hrithik said, "Six to 35. I am 35 (years old)."

The actor, however, said that things improved for him gradually, after he started practicing speech therapies on a daily basis. Last seen in the epic 'Jodhaa Akbar', the Hrithik has won four Filmfare awards for the best actor after debuting in the industry eight years ago. His next film 'Kites' is expected to release by the end of this year.

Katrina Kaif is a treat - Ranbir Kapoor

Who is this fellow, that too a Bollywood hunk, who believes that Katrina Kaif is a “treat”? Well, he is none.

Other than Kapoor scion Ranbir Kapoor, her co star in two forthcoming films. So, what’s brewing between Katrina and Ranbir?

The duo reportedly got so cozy on the sets of Rajkumar Santoshi’s ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’ that even the unit members found It difficult to digest and this was supposedly also the reason why Ranbir’s girl friend Deepika Padukone suddenly visited the sets of the film.

“With Ranbir, I can be myself. I guess it’s the age and the film’s a comedy, so the atmosphere on the sets was like that,” Katrina was quoted as saying.

While for Ranbir, “She’s a treat”. Not only that, the cool dude and the gorgeous diva share a common secretary too.

So apart from the rom com Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, which is slated for November 6 release, we are sure that the new ‘hot and happening’ on screen couple of Bollywood will rock the silver screen with their next film Rajneeti, a political thriller. Wonder what Salman Khan and Deepika make of it all.

Interview - Lara Dutta

Miss Universe Lara Dutta stepped into various genres of movies but off late her trademark movies are mainstream comedy.

She started out her career with films like ANDAAZ, MUMBAI SE AAYA MERA DOST, BHAAGAM BHAAG, NO ENTRY, PARTNER, BILLU BARBER etc.

The dazzling Lara Dutta is back again in yet another comedy flick DO KNOT DISTURB, directed by David Dhawan starring Govinda. In conversation with Lara Dutta...

Tell us more about your film DO KNOT DISTURB. What kind of character do you play? I'm playing Dolly in the movie who is in love with a married man and to hide the post marital love affair.

A lot of situations arises which turn out to be a complete drama with humor. The film has been directed by David Dhawan and produced by Vashu Bhagnani.

So are you the same Govinda's Dolly who has become so popular with the audience? Yes, I'm his Dolly and she has become famous just because the way Chi-Chi calls her. How was your experience working with another Ex-Miss Universe Sushmita Sen? It was good, but we had very few scenes together, all together it was a dream come true working with her.

With two former Miss Universe working together in the same film, we heard that there were few clashes between you two? Is it necessary that if two actresses are working together, they are bound to have a cat fight? The shoot was a really good experience and nothing like that happened.

How was it working with Govinda again? It was indeed a fantastic experience working with him again after doing movies like BHAAGAM BHAAG and PARTNER. But this time, I got more opportunity to perform with him. But this doesn't end here; I've worked with Govinda again in Ravi Chopra's BANDA YE BINDAAS HAI which will be released soon.

Did you face any kind of problem while shooting for DO KNOT DISTURB? When you have Govinda and David Dhawan together, humor comes out automatically & naturally. So I tried hard to come up to their level.

And what is the reason behind you taking up comedy flicks? Well, it's mostly because I'm getting more of these types of movies. Also working in a comedy movie is a lot of fun and I really enjoy my work. I believe that it's more difficult to work for a comedy film than playing a serious character. I really relish working with directors like David Dhawan, Priyadarshan and Sajid Khan.

Rani has an action flick on her agenda

Hundreds of cheering fans welcomed actress Rani Mukerji at a newly-opened multiplex in Fatima Nagar on Wednesday.

The actor was in the city to promote her latest film that has her portraying the characters of a Punjabi girl and a youth all at the same time.

Addressing the media, Mukerji said, "I believe the film offers a paisa-vasool' experience to the audience which I think is very essential to establish an emotional connect with the audience.

I think we need to change with time and reinvent ourselves which is what I tried to do," she said. Mukerji plays a Punjabi girl in the film who pretends to be a Punjabi youth to get into the men's cricket team.

The film has Shahid Kapur playing the male lead. "Shahid and I would crack jokes very often on the sets. We are very similar people and we have the same kind of focus towards our respective careers," she said.

Speaking of the film, Mukerji said that while she did not have to do any research on how to play a Punjabi youth complete with a turban, the game of cricket did require some practice. "It was a game I have never played before so it took be about six months to learn how to play it. Interestingly, no one has commented on my cricketing skills so I assume I look effortless as a cricketer," she grinned.

Mukerji now wants to do an action flick since she believes that the preparation for the movie would involve learning a new craft. "I'm dying to do a film that has me doing some action and I would jump at any such opportunity offered to me," she said.

So was the outbreak of the H1N1 flu a worry before she came to the city? "I did not think of the H1N1 flu till I saw people wearing masks in the city. So I can safely say that I did not think of it," she smiled. She also said that she believed in focusing on one film at a time and so had not signed any more films. "Today, publicity and promotion of a film is very important. I give my 100 per cent to a film and I plan to continue doing that," she concluded.

I'll marry for love - Priyanka

Desi girl Priyanka Chopra was in Ahmedabad for promoting her upcoming release What’s Your Raashee?

In a chat session with TOI, the demure actress speaks about professionalism, rumours, friendship and the number game in Bollywood.

Excerpts from the interview ... Learning curve Priyanka opened her innings in the glam world at the age of 17 and hasn’t looked back.

“Everything happened so fast and within such a short span. I didn’t even get time to retrospect,” says the actress.

Priyanka’s parents rendered immense support during the formative years of her career. The actor now takes pride in being self-reliant. “My parents are busy with other things to be taken care of. I am on my own now.”

Professionalism speaks Priyanka is a thorough professional who has always surged ahead with an indomitable spirit.

“I belong to a family with an army background. I have been taught on discipline, one’s responsibilities and that one needs to respect time. It’s very hard for others to understand about my condition as they are concerned more with the production costs in case a shoot gets cancelled. So I try to accomplish my task on the sets even though I am running with high temperature. However, this aggravates the health situation as it happened earlier.”

What’s in a number? “Number game does happen but as an actor I want to give my best. I take pride in the kind of work I do. I feel bad if my work is not appreciated. I know that a film’s success will put me on the top position. If a film fails at the Box Office, that will make me trail by five or six positions.

But the number game doesn’t affect me.” Does she feel pressured? “It’s really scary. I owe a lot to my fans and people who have admired my work. Their great expectations at times really scare me. But by God’s grace I am doing well,” says the actress.

Dostana in Bollywood “I don’t think two top actresses can ever be best friends because they are competing with each other. They can hang out together but the unconditional love between two close pals will be missing in this relationship.”

On rumours “People link me with male actors who I work with. I hate reading about all those rumours. I too belong to a family. How does a father react to the news about his daughter having a string of affairs?”

The real Piggy Chops What keeps Priyanka going strong is her focused approach so far as her career is concerned. “I am very emotional, fun loving, moody and hardworking person who thinks from within. I am very attached to my family and friends.” On Cupid “If I get into a relationship I will speak about it with great pride. I will go for a love marriage but only with my parents’ consent.”

Life’s mantra “There are two philosophies in life: I would want to live in every moment and not think about tomorrow; continue living my life the way it is now and do good work with my family and friends standing by my side.”

It is said that the 36-year-old actor is so protective of his bikes that even his girlfriend of seven years actress Bipasha Basu doesn’t like to sit on them.

Kats cheesed of about controversy!

If a busy shooting schedule wasn't enough, Katrina Kaif has also had to deal with numerous controversies over the life of her career, most notably the media interest with her beau Salman Khan.

Recently a television channel irked the actress when they repeatedly screened pictures of her and co-star Ranbir Kapoor reaching out to each other and hugging on the road.

The suggestive clipping had the channel wondering aloud what Salman Khan would have to say about Katrina's public display of intimacy.

Kats is one unhappy lady, especially as the scene was shot for her upcoming movie Rajneeti. The actress was indignant that many had claimed.

The news to be true despite being dressed up for her character in the movie. "Am I so dumb as to indulge in a public display of affection with my co-star?

Grant me more common sense." Katrina replied as she tried to clear up the matter.Kats cheesed of about controversy!

Kaif's busy shooting schedule also meant that she had to give the music release of Salman's Main aur Mrs Khanna a miss. Katrina knows how to blow off a controversy very well. She stated that everyone is busy with their own commitments and having to fight off their fair share of bizarre allegations.

Bipasha wants pest control!

Bipasha Basu is loving every minute of her shoot with Priyadarshan in Karaikudi near Madurai in Tamil Nadu, but she is petrified of the mosquitoes that have been troubling her.

While the producers have made loads of arrangements to try and keep the pests away, the occasional mosquito still bays for the unit’s blood.

A funny conversation was heard between the sexy Bengali bombshell and one of the production assistants.

Said Bips to the assistant, “Make sure that mosquitoes don’t come anywhere near me. I don’t want to get bitten. I’m mortally scared of getting malaria.”

Apparently, the assistant replied: “Madam, don’t worry... first of all I have made sure that mosquitoes don’t come near you.

And, God forbid, even one or two come they will not bite you.” Bips apparently rolled with laughter when she heard this. She has heard of men talking to their pets. But she has never heard of a man talking to pests (mosquitoes in this case.)

Ash is grace under pressure

Bless Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. The dignity she showed as some old wounds opened up qualifies her as the real-life Jodhaa. Dignity under pressure is a tall order.

Lata Mangeshkar, Rekha and Aishwarya are portraits of composure during the most trying of times.

They’ve all had their share of discomforting moments. Never have they recoiled, retaliated and caved in.

And yes, their heads haven’t spun around with the giddy aphrodisiac of success. For some strange reason female celebrities are more prone to an absurd upsurge of self-worth than men.

I call it the Friday-before-and-after effect. For Mallika Sherawat, I was a mentor before the Friday when Murder released. Then the mentor became the tormentor.

Where is Mallika by the way? Last I heard. She was getting her extremely well-oiled publicity machinery to spread stories about how she was was heading for various posh assignment in the West. I don’t know how many of those Westward-bound projects actually materialised.

Aeons ago Gregory Peck met Suraiya, who was fascinated by Peck because he resembled her crush Dev Anand. Gerard Butler seemed interested in Priyanka Chopra because she resembles his co-star Katherine Heigl. The more things change (from the era of the aura to the aura of the tacky) the more they remain the same.

Could this be just a coincidence? But all the three main Indian films at the Toronto Film Festival this year are predominantly and entirely female-oriented. So many female-oriented films ... Actresses are finally breaking the myth that films with women at the helm are out of favour. It takes a Lisa Ray to show the world what woman power really means.

It’s strange. We live in a society which still practices female foeticide. And we still worship Durga and Kali. But in the industry it’s the mothers, who have ruled the roost. From Vyjayanthimala’s grandmom to Hema Malini’s mom, today too, Ayesha Takia and Amrita Rao’s mothers are more visible than their fathers. It may be a man’s world outside, but within the industry it’s a matriarchal cosmos.

Bollywoods first gay tough guy?

With homosexuality getting increased acceptance in the country, isn’t it time for Bollywood to get a gay, macho character?

Actually, it might already have in Charlie, the lisping ‘bad boy’ hero in this year’s hit, Kaminey. From bloggers to critics, many have speculated about.

The sexuality of the character portrayed by Shahid Kapoor. To begin with, Charlie lisps a standard gay stereotype.

Apart from that, his relationship with Mikhail has distinctly homoerotic undertones. The two sing duets in a psychedelic nightclub, dance in the rain and make plans to run away.

While rolling on the floor together when Charlie tells Mikhail about the stash of cocaine he has chanced upon?

And a scene where Mikhail chases Charlie in a red sports car, amidst pouring rain, would have had Freud smiling in glee.

What about the ending, which shows Charlie, hitched to a gorgeous gal? Blogger Ganesh Chandrashekhar argues that it’s a post-death dream. ‘‘Charlie dreams of being a successful bookie and married to a woman.

This looks like Charlie’s homosexual guilt coming through, because the addition of a female character in the end seemed rather contrived, suggesting that he hopes to be straight in a highly homophobic society.’’

Other bloggers have pointed to Charlie’s emotional breakdown when he sees Mikhail’s corpse. And they see heavy symbolism in Charlie naming his dream bookie venture ‘Mikhail & Co.’, which is set up after he steals diamonds. Which by implication means Charlie stole diamonds for Mikhail. If that isn’t true love, what is?

Chandan Roy Sanyal, who plays Mikhail, says he is aware of such arguments. ‘‘I don’t think the two are gay, they just share a brotherly relationship. I grew up like this with my brother, a lot of bonding, touching,’’ he laughs.

But he welcomes the buzz about the characters. ‘‘People thinking that Charlie is gay shows they are ready to accept that gay men do not have to be overtly effeminate,’’ says Sanyal, adding that he would love to play a role like Sean Penn in the Hollywood film Milk.

But Bollywood is only taking baby steps with movies like Dostana, says film critic Anupama Chopra. ‘‘We still portray gay men with limp wrists and rainbow-coloured accessories, mostly cast as a comic relief. It is a long time till we get a gay hero who is macho enough to be the lead actor. In fact, Vishal Bhardwaj told me if a sequel is made, Charlie will have a girlfriend,’’ she says. As conspiracy theorists might say, ‘‘Fo fad”.

John joins SRK, Aamir

John Abraham joins Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan in Danny Boyle and Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet...

Mumbai Mirror had reported on September 14 in the story Boyle Bells The Cats? that Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan will star together in Danny Boyle and Anurag Kashyap’s forthcoming film, Bombay Velvet.

Well, the film got much bigger as news is that John Abraham was actually the first actor to be signed on for the international epic.

A source says, “This was just after John and Anurag formed a mutual fan-club after working together in No Smoking.

Although the film didn’t work at the box-office both John and Anurag vowed to do another film. That’s when Bombay Velvet was born.

The film has three segments and John was signed on for the second segment. He will play a real-life 1960s hero of the masses.” SRK and Aamir will star in the first and third segments respectively. John has since then been reading up extensively to prepare for his first true-to-life character.

The role requires him to completely change his body language and to get rid of his very contemporary body language and mannerisms. In fact, friends have been provoking John into believing that he is no longer part of the project. But John isn’t the least bit fazed.

A friend of John says, “When he heard that Aamir was signed, John was really happy for Anurag. People told John that Aamir had replaced him but John knew the truth. Even if it was true, he’d have been happy for Anurag.

However, Anurag would never ever drop John. After 10 years of struggle in the film industry, John was the first hero who took Anurag seriously. Earlier every attempt to get into the big league had failed. Anurag would rather drop the project than drop John.”

Speaking about John starring in Bombay Velvet, Anurag Kashyap had said earlier, “John Abraham has drastically cut his price for my next film Bombay Velvet. So even when I work with stars my project becomes economical.

I don’t charge any money as a director until the film makes money. After No Smoking, John and I want to make sure our film is accessible to the audience. Today I realise where I had gone wrong in my earlier cinema. I’m working on my weak points. I tend to get repetitive. So I’ve got two writers for Bombay Velvet who criticised me the most for No Smoking.”

I am not on Twitter - Katrina

“Something has to be done to stop this sort of vandalism. I am not on Twitter or any other social networking website.I plan to start my own website by the end of the year.”

Katrina Kaif doesn’t believe in half measures. It comes as no surprise to know that she intends to start her own website.

After months of research, preparation and build- up before the internet’s most ‘hit’ girl delves deeply into her own domain.

The actual launch will be by the end of the year. “I don’t want this to be something I start and then leave to others to take care of.

Of course there will be professional employed to oversee my website. But I’ll picking and choosing all the material and pictures that go into it.”

Katrina’s website to be called is being launched with maximum care. Katrina wants it to be one-stop all-purpose Katrina Kaif stopover for all fans on the net.

Other websites using her pictures and quotes without proper consent would have to face legal consequences.

Considering she’s the most searched and googled Bollywood actress , surely telescoping and restricting the inflow of information and pictures would be tough. Says Katrina, “My website will be comprehensive. It will have my exclusive pictures. In fact I’ll be doing photo sessions done specially by me. It will also have pictures taken by me on my sets and on location.”

What Katrina’s website won’t have is accounts and reports on her day-to-day activities. “I don’t think it’s cool to let people know where I am or what I’m doing throughout the day. I’m not on any of the social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. I guess my life is no an open Facebook, “ she puns.

The design colours and format for her website are ready. “ I looked at several designs presented to me. Then I saw a British actress’ website which I quite liked, though it was too dark for my personality. My website will be fun, feisty, bubbly and colourful, to go with my image.”Katrina’s website has been designed by her sister’s boyfriend and two professional designers from Great Britain. “There’s nothing haphazard and everything official about it,” she chuckles.

Bipasha Basu is street smart

Bipasha Basu is very clear about money. The Bengali bombshell recently refused to go to Chicago and Houston for a meet and greet with fans because of some doubts regarding remuneration.

After living on her own for almost a decade, the actress has learnt to survive on her gut instincts and laying her terms on the table before she signs on the dotted line.

The actress tells Businessofcinema.com, "I am an entertainer and I am paid to perform. So it is my right to demand the right remuneration and it is upto the person to accept it or not.

Most actresses have issues of having the top bill at an awards ceremony. I sincerely don't have such doubts.

If your act is good, wherever it is placed, it will stand out. Once there is a financial arrangement, I don't get into all those nitty gritties."

The actress may have the right money sense but she depends a lot on her father's sharp business acumen to make her savings. Hirak Basu, the proud dad says, "Bipasha is very aware of where to invest and perhaps, due to her leaving home at an early age, she has learnt to be street smart."

Ranis Gameplan!

Looks like Rani Mukherji is determined to give the much younger Kareena Kapoor and Katrina Kaif a run for their money. Masala! reveals her gameplan...

All new body Rani Mukherji not only set up a gym at home but spent hours in there with her trainer. She also took up yoga super seriously.

Although she has not dropped to size zero like Bebo, she now has a body she can truly flaunt. And to think this is the same girl who looked pretty much rotund in her mini skirts in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai! Rani’s got herself a body at 30-plus that is every teeny bopper’s dream. Way to go!

Wardrobe make-over From wearing designer shalwar suits, Rani’s changed to trendy maxis and shift dresses, skin tight jeans and corset tops.

The actress, whose style sense was not something to write home about, has definitely got herself a new stylist and is keeping herself updated about what the latest IT girls are wearing. Sensible decision, Rani.

Younger hero She’s all set to change the B’wood trend of a 40something hero romancing a 20something heroine. Rani’s acting with a much-younger Shahid and the age difference is not showing at all, if the promos are anything to go by. If Dil Bole Hadippa is a hit, then Rani can start the reverse trend and go on to work with Ranbir, Imran, Neil… What will the younger girls do then?

Tough role Remember Hillary Swank playing a man in Boys Don’t Cry? Rani’s pushing the boundaries and doing just that in Dil Bole Hadippa. That too with comical overtones. Being a brilliant actress, she could well play the perfect Sikh. Better than Saif, Akshay, Ranbir and co...

Interview - Kangana Ranaut

After mastering all negative shades, Kangana Ranaut is all set to try out lighter shades in her forthcoming film VAADA RAHA.

The actor in a chit chat with a correspondent. What's Vaada Raha all about?

VAADA RAHA is a film by Next Gen and Top Angle Productions. It is produced and directed by Samir Karnik. I play the love-interest of Bobby Deol.

He plays a doctor who is researching on cancer. He is very positive and fun-loving person.

But, an incident occurs in his life which changes the flow. It is very emotional film. And I am sure audience will love it. This is the first time you are working with Director Samir Karnik and actor Bobby Deol. How was it working with them?

As I said, Samir Karnik has made a beautiful movie and it was immensely great working with him. Bobby is a very humble co-actor. We make a nice-pair. You are known to enact the character of a drug-addict, psychic, with negative shades. And it is indeed not everyone's cup of tea. You must be mostly approached with such roles?

(Laughs)Yes, I know I am a good drug addict and psycho on screen. And that is absolutely true that I have been getting such offers...sometimes I feel I'll be getting such offers only. Your forthcoming films? KITES, ONCE UPON A TIME, NO PROBLEM and EK NIRANJAN.

Tell us something about your film KITES. I am playing a salsa-dancer in the film. I learnt many dance-steps from Hrithik Roshan on the sets. One will see different Kangana in coming times. Your journey started with GANGSTER and today you are counted amongst performance-pact actors. How does it feel? My journey has been great, touch-wood. I worked with Anurag Basu in my first film, and then did two consecutive films with him, under Mahesh Bhatt banner, what more can I ask for.

Deepika keeping an eye on Ranbir?

Back from London after a hectic schedule, all she wanted was to be with her beau. Was that the reason.

Why Deepika Padukone came to Bhopal along with Ranbir Kapoor or was it to keep an eye on him while he shoots Rajneeti with Katrina Kaif.

Whatever the reason, Deepika’s visit to ‘Rajneeti’ sets seems too coincidental. Last year too Deepika joined Ranbir.

When he was in Ooty shooting for Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani with Katz. Maybe Deepika has started feeling insecure.

About her man whose name is linked with one of the best looking women in B-Town. As for now, the busy couple has managed spend some time together.

If Ranbir had Wake Up Sid and ‘Rajneeti’, Deepika has been keeping busy with movies like Housefull and Kartik Calling Kartik.

So, while Deepika was on the sets, Katrina chose not to invade their privacy. Guess the couple didn’t have to put up the ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign.
