Review KMD: Priyadarshan dishes out a good fare

Starring Nana Patekar, Shreyas Talpade, Madhurima Bannerjee, Om Puri, Paresh Rawal, Asrani, Neeraj Vora

Directed by Priyadarshan

Rating: ***

If you can overlook the outrageous suggestion that Nana Patekar could be Om Puri's son then you're in for some clean healthy wholesome and engaging fun in this comic drama about a stranger who walks into a Catholic village and changes malfunctional lives with his positivity .

Does the reformation in the Church theme ring a bell? Films of Hrishikesh Mukherjee(Anand, Bawarchi, Budha Mil Gaya, Khubsoorat) attempted the same theme of the whimsical but endearing stranger who walks in with an eccentric agenda to change jaded lives.

Priyadarshan's parodic populace is a city of eccentricity. Rural or urban, the characters are whimsical, stubborn, and oddly out of step with the socio-political reality of the world that they seem to inhabit from the fringes without being able to position themselves in the mainstream.

Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal (KDM) gives us Priyan's people at their quirkiest. There is a farmer Om Puri , his wife(Sona Nair) two daughters and a wastrel of a son(played with superb slothfulness by Shreyas Talpade) in whose life comes a dark brooding stranger Nana Patekar who be any of many things....a long-lost brother,an unwanted bother,a ghost from another world, a blast from the past, a foodie who clean-sweeps all the food on the table...fast! Leaving Om Puri's family pooree aghast.

It is interesting to see how Priyadarshan brings into play a small church-based village community's affinity to religion, courtship and domestic politics. Here is a village sustaining itself at the grassroots with spirited hilarity, often self-directed. Though a little tongue-in-cheek if not altogether blasphemous, I was tickled by the heroine's female body-guard(Pratima Kazmi)'s one-sided passion for the priest played with Asrani in an ill-fitting cassock. This audacious plot-track was more outrageously comical than newbie Madhurima Bannerjee's endless courtship with the eminently unlikeable wimp(Talpade).
This isn't the first Priyadarshan film where the pampered heiress is protected from male attention by her slew of bullying brothers. Earlier Kareena Kapoor was similarly cordoned off from Akshaye Khanna's attention in Hulchal .

Recurrent themes often give Priyadarshan comedies a sinking sense of sameness. KDM is one of Priyadarshan's better potboilers in recent times. KDM is a remake of a Malayalam film Marykundoro Kunjaado. Priyan hasn't been able to do away with a regional flavour in the story. The cloistered gossip-mongering Keral village may seem odd to Hindi-speaking audiences. But the film has been shot by R.Ganesh in a beautiful lakeside township .There are lush images of fields and meadows. The climactic chase catches Nana and Shreyas running through a harvest-ready field in the dead of the night. It's an arresting image, framed and shot with care.

Though Neeraj Vora's dialogues have seen better digs, they capture the ethos of eccentric antics well. The actors are all in the mood to have fun.
Tucked away in this rumbustious drama of mistaken identity and godforsaken raillery is a message on trust, belief and honesty. All of this is put forward with zero dependence on vulgarity. The double meaning is restricted to the ambivalence of the characters. The principal actors specially Nana Patekar(duly deadpan), Shreyas Talpade(blissfully and brazenly selfserving),Om Puri(incredibly unselfconscious), Paresh Rawal(wickedly ironic) and Neera Vora(a scream as a coffin maker who prays for the dying to be dead) get into the swing of things. They lend a layering to the laughter.

An interesting film, and far superior to the prolific Priyadarshan's other recent comedies like De Dana Dan,Khatta Meetha and the prequel to KDM, Malaamaal Weekly.

Now Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal faces Religious Wrath

After protests in Mumbai, the Christian community in Goa is up in arms against Priyadarshan's latest film "Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal".

The Goan Catholic Welfare Union (GCWU) has threatened to disallow the screening of the film in the state if "objectionable" scenes in it are not deleted.

"If the film is screened in Goa we will protest. We will make sure that it is not shown," GCWU spokesperson Juino de Souza told. "If need be we will involve the chief minister and Christian legislators in the Goa assembly," de Souza said.

The GCWU here has raised objection to scenes of a Roman Catholic priest shaking a leg to peppy music, and the "abuse" of symbolic Christian images like a cassock wearing priest fooling around with the Holy Water and wearing a garland of lotteries.

"Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal", which releases this week, stars Nana Patekar, Paresh Rawal, Om Puri and Shakti Kapoor, and has been produced by Percept Picture Company.

Joseph Dias, on behalf of the Christian-Catholic Secular Forum (CCSF), accused the film industry of taking the Catholic faith for granted.

"We don't even protest vociferously enough, let aside come on to the streets or be violent. No one is advocating violence, but a legal protest must go out from every Christian and Church... if we are to live with respect and not as second-class citizens," he told reporters.

Just a few months back, another film "Kya Super Kool Hain Hum" had been in the news after Catholic groups protested scenes where a priest had been shown solemnising a marriage between dogs.

Shreyas plays real-life hero to Madhhurima!

He may be playing a hero who gets slapped by the entire village in his latest comic caper up for release, Percept Pictures' Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal, but in reality Shreyas proved to be anything but that.

In Punjab, while he was happily promoting the film with co-actor Madhhurima in one of the malls, where over three thousand people had gathered, the frenzy was robust, and everyone worth their moments of fancy, wanted their moment of comity with the two young stars.

Even though over ten bouncers attempted to keep the crowds in check, it took all of Talpade's chivalrous might to keep Madhhurima safe from the crowds, as post the event he escorted her safely back from the venue, from the the overzealous crowds that wanted too grab a share of its star.

A successful event, it was already going the Kamaal Dhamaal way with the stars interacting with the crowds, a few lucky winners also chanced upon gold coins, cornering the touchstone of Malamaal too in the same vein.

But the luckiest was when Shreyas' quickthinking helped the couple make a timely exit from the mall. Priyadarshan's Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal is sure creating the right buzz before its September 28 release!

Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal soundtrack lacks fizz

Music Director: Sajid-Wajid

Lyricist: Jalees Shewani

Singers: Shadaab Faridi, Monali Thakur, Mamta Sharma, Sarosh Sami, Keerthi Sagathia, Sugandha Mishra, Babul Supriyo, Bela Shende, Ujjaini, Uvie, Wajid

Rating: **

Filmmaker Priyadarshan is back with another comic-caper "Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal" to tickle your funny bones. The film's fate will be decided when it releases, but its soundtrack tries hard to make you smile.

There are five original tracks composed by Sajid-Wajid and penned by Jalees Shewani. The album also has four remixes.

The musical journey kicks off with "Dariya ho", which starts on a high with singer Shadaab Faradi setting the mood right. Monali Thakur joins him for the romantic track that tries to bring festive spirit. However, the composition is a bit low-key and the song lacks the fizz.

One hopes to get a respite in its remix version, but that has the most haphazard usage of beats. Quite a dud this one!

Next up is "Desi mem", which has some catchy beats to keep you hooked after the initial bad eggs. But, like its predecessor, it too fizzles out quickly. The run-of-the-mill lyrics mar the track and the composition loses its track. Even Mamta Sharma is unable to save this one.
However, a ray of hope comes with its remix version that has been given way better treatment by the composers than the original. The beats are catchy and pull off the track quite well with a sigh of relief for the listener.

It is followed by "Zor naache", which truly brings out the rural flavour. Singers Keerthi Sagathia and Sugandha Mishra have done a decent job with the vocals. However, musically speaking, there isn't anything great about the track except that it justifies the rural setting of the film.

Next up is a desi item number "Ringa Ringa", which has Anjana Sukhani shaking a leg on some really groovy beats. There is finally something to cheer about in the music department with a fine composition by the musical duo. Ujjaini and Sarosh Sami have done a wonderful job in the vocals and together they are able to make the listener happy with the catchy song.

It also has a remix version crooned by Abhilasha Chellam, which is well poised and enjoyable, but one should prefer to stick with the original.
Rounding up the album is "Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal - Theme", which opens with the same tone like "Rnga Ringa". Crooned by Uvie and Wajid, it is actually quite similar to "Ringa Ringa" and it's hard to find much difference between the two.

The final verdict is that music has never been much of a forte for Priyadarshan's films, but at a time when music lovers are treated with such wonderful Bollywood soundtracks, the makers should have put in some effort to dole out at least an average sounding album.

Nana ignores back pain, lifts Shreyas

At 62, Nana Patekar has an undying spirit to give his best. The actor was suffering pain due to a back injury, but that didn't deter him from lifting Shreyas Talpade on his shoulders for a shoot for "Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal".

While shooting for the Percept Pictures' comedy film, Nana reached dot on time despite a back injury. He says he believes injuries are like guests.

"If you treat them well and pamper them, they stay back and refuse to go away. You need to be aloof about their existence and they leave as quickly as they came, " Nana said in a statement.

Thanks to his spirit, he effortlessly lifted Shreyas for a pose for the Priyadarshan-directed movie. He also credits his ability to carry off the stunt to his health consciousness.

"It is important for each of us to maintain a healthy lifestyle. We need to let go of addictions. I have. So can you. And once you are healthy, go for walks, do yoga and quit bad habits like smoking and drinking, you will be fit and fine, " he said.

Shreyas Talpade gets a new duplex pad

The actor has purchased the apartment in the building he currently resides in

Shreyas Talpade has a new home. The actor has bought a spanking new 4,000 square feet duplex in Oshiwara. Shreyas, who currently resides on the sixth floor of the Waldorf building, is said to have purchased flats on the 13th and the 14th floor in the same block.

An elated Shreyas says, `Yes, I bought the flat about a month back. I was looking to shift in to a bigger flat since sometime now and thankfully I got one in my building itself. It was a duplex that the builder had kept for himself and I managed to convince him.

I am superstitious about shifting into a house as its first owner. Secondly, it is the same building that I stay in so everything is more or less set. I will be shifting into the flat by Diwali or by early next year.`

Shreyas, however, refuses to divulge how much he paid for this apartment.

He says, `I would say it is quite a steal for me considering I got everything that I wanted and that too in the same building that I am staying in.

I have two dogs Don and Knight and we are designing everything keeping them in mind. In fact, we joke that the new flat is for them and not for us (laughs). My cousin Mohnish Talpade and my wife Dipti are designing the flat.

Shreyas is happy to work with Priyadarshan

Actor Shreyas has come in association with Priyadarshan for the first time and he seems to be quite happy

He tells CS, “Priyan Sir likes the hero sticking to his script. He asks, ‘What is the line? Please just say that.’ He doesn’t like anyone improvising. You can of course ask him for permission and if he thinks it might work, he lets you go ahead and add your bit to the original dialogues.

He is quite a task master. For me, working with Priyan Sir have been revelations. It has been a great experience as you have to keep reinventing yourself and he gave me an opportunity to do just that.”

After much delay, Sunny Deol's next film is all set to roll again; Shreyas Talpade joins the cast

Neeraj Pathak’s Sunny Deol-starrer that was plagued with production problems now gets a fresh lease of life. The film is back on track with an addition to the cast — Shreyas Talpade. The actor has been included instead of Tusshar Kapoor, who opted out due to date issues.

As the project was being continuously delayed, Tusshar decided to walk out as his other projects were being affected.

Says Shreyas, “I essay the role of a writer and have a distinct look in the film. I am super-excited about it as it is an action-comedy.” The film, which has Sunny essay a double role, also stars Mithun Chakraborty, Arshad Warsi, Ameesha Patel and Prakash Raj.

Producer Fauzia Arshi who was involved in a dispute with director Neeraj Pathak has sorted out the issues. The shooting resumed yesterday in the city. The film had been stalled after an initial spell of shooting in Mahabaleshwar due to budgetary reasons.

There had also been buzz that the film was being shelved and another producer was taking over the film. But Fauzia says, “I am happy that the project is on. My co-producer and I have made it roll again.”

Ajay Devgn breaks container on Rohit Shetty's head

Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn has pulled off many stunts in his career, but this was unique. He went ahead and broke a glass bottle on his director friend Rohit Shetty's head on the sets of Zee TV's Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Singing Superstar. The duo, along with Kareena Kapoor, Kunal Khemu, Shreyas Talpade and Tusshar Kapoor, made a special appearance on the show for the music release of their upcoming film Golmaal 3. Ajay did the stunt in good fun, after music director duo Sajid-Wajid coaxed the usually reticent actor to sing a song for the audience. The actor gave in to their request and sang Mere naina sawan bhadon.

Ajay Devgn breaks container on Rohit Shetty's head

After fulfilling their demand, Ajay asked the composers to do a stunt that he chose to demonstrate - he broke a bottle on Shetty's head and the latter started bleeding. When Ajay asked Sajid-Wajid to be ready for the same, they chickened out, said a source from the sets. But guess who was sporting enough? It was the show's new host, actor Manish Paul, who ended up getting the bottle cracked on his derriere. The episode will be telecast on Sunday.
