Mahila Morcha, the women's wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), alleges that actress Shwetha Menon and director Blessy are "exploiting motherhood for commercial purposes" by incorporating the actress's delivery in "Kalimannu".
On Sep 27, Shwetha delivered a baby girl at Nanavati Hospital in Mumbai and Blessy captured her delivery and has incorporated it in his forthcoming release "Kalimannu". At the time of the delivery Swetha's husband Sreevalsan Menon was also present.
"We have already asked the state government to see that permission is not granted (to show the scene) because a bad precedent is being set in the name of the art," Mahila Morcha chairperson Shoba Surendran told reporters in Thrissur.
"This is certainly a shame because this is a ploy on the part of the actress and director Blessy to exploit motherhood for commercial purpose and to get audience queue up to see their film," added Surendran.
Kerala legislative assembly Speaker G. Karthikeyan recently expressed his displeasure at the filming of the child birth and said that it wasn't right to capture it on camera.
"Even if the actress had agreed, a director of Blessy's repute should not have shot the scenes for the film," said Karthikeyan.
The film's shooting is over and it is about an intimate relationship between a mother and her newborn.
Academic and activist J. Devika is not so worried about the filming of child birth, her concern is the health of the baby because of the numerous lights that had been used to shoot the scene.
"What I don't understand is the issue that has been raked up on the shooting. Anyone can go on YouTube where so many videos on child birth are available," she said.
Blessy has already gone public, saying that the controversy is needless as no one has seen the film so far and how it has been shot.
