She completed all her shooting schedules and left no work pending before taking this holiday so she could enjoy her time with her parents and sister without having to delay her commitments to her work

SRK's Chennai Express breaks records in Pak

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan starrer "Chennai Express" has grossed rupees 40 million, breaking all box office records in Pakistan's biggest city after its release at the Eid weekend on August 9

The action comedy film directed by Rohit Shetty also stars Deepika Padukone. "There is no doubt that 'Chennai Express' has become the biggest box office hit from India since the government allowed screening of Indian movies in the country," Mohammad Qadri the media spokesman for IMGC told.

IMGC is the biggest distribution company in Pakistan with its offices based in Lahore and it imports Indian films via Dubai. Qadri said that since its release in just eight screens in Karachi, "Chennai Express" had grossed over 40 million rupees and the figure was mounting.

"I can't give the exact figures now but the initial estimate of ticket sales for the week since its release 'Chennai Express' has grossed over 40 million rupees. The figure will be higher when the final figures of ticket sales for all over Pakistan are available by Monday," Qadri said.

The previous record for highest grossing movie from India was held by Salman Khan's "Dabangg" in Karachi. Qadri said due to the high demand for tickets the cinema owners had also hiked up prices for "Chennai Express" and in some areas it was being screened in five to six shows in a day. 

"Clearly the Pakistani people enjoy the movies of Shah Rukh Khan and its ticket sales exceeded expectations and it did much better than all the other Eid releases including some Pakistani movies and the Hollywood blockbuster, 'Wolverine'. 

" Pakistani film critics have also described the film as an entertaining time pass and one critic wrote, "The Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone starrer is an aesthetically selected evolution of the 'Dabangg' genre."

Movie Review: Board 'Chennai Express' if you are an SRK fan

Dammit! No out-takes!! Is this really a Rohit Shetty film? Every film of the Gol Maal director so far ended with out-takes giving us entertaining glimpses from during the making of the film. Here those trademark Shetty out-takes are replaced by a Honey Singh track which celebrates Rajnikanth and the lungi.

The rest of the film resembles those typical sambar-and-sandalwood creations by K Raghvendra Rao, and worse still, Raj Kanwar's Dhai Akshar Prem Ke where Aishwarya to escape her parental wrath at her elopement, introduces a man she has just met to her family as her soul-mate. 

Of course there are the flying cars exploding in the air to make sure we know that all said and drummed, this is a Rohit Shetty presentation. 

Packaged with pickled precision, peppered with just the right doses of naughty jokes and precocious pranks that go well with Shah Rukh's 40-year old brat's act, Chennai Express is the kind of non-toxic comic entertainer where the most damaging double- entendres you'd get is a Tamil word that sounds like Angelina Jolie's name. 

Come again? 

That brings me to another major hurdle in the heap of hilarity that Shetty builds so meticulously in the first-half. 
The generous outflow of Tamil that seems initially engaging (more so, since Shah Rukh shares our non-comprehension of the rapidfire Tamilian cloudburst that accompanies Deepika's quicksilver character) begins to come in the way as the narration grows older and runs out of energy. 

But then there is the sprightly Deepika as the runaway Tamilian girl who piles on to the North Indian mithaiwala stranger to escape marrying the boorish fiancee back home in her village in Tamil Nadu. 

We've seen Kareena Kapoor do the chirpy runaway train traveler in Jab We Met. Deepika brings a special filtered-coffee flavour to her chirpy character. Even that broad hammy accent grows on us. Yes, we like ! 

Here she is is the only Rohit Shetty team member (and I use the term 'team' since Shetty generously credits the direction to himself and his team) who seems to have a firm grip over her rudderless dithering character. Deepika plays Meena Amma with flavourful flourish. 
She is specially delightful in three key sequences, two of them comic and the other unexpectedly somber. In the sequence where her character turns into a sleeping kicking and convulsive zombie she's unbelievably goofy. It's not just Shah Rukh who gets a kick out of that scene. 

Would Rohit Shetty please do a full-fledged out-and-out comedy with Deepika? That, Chennai Express is not. It is a half-hearted but laugh-hearted effort that makes the fatal error of taking itself too seriously. Towards the end when the utterly shammed climactic fight ensues, we even have a long speech by Shah Rukh on the social status of the girl child. 

Not now, please!
As we squirm at the attempt to turn comedy into a serious business we look back at the rest of the film with some amount of wramth and affection. Some of the long shots of the train winding through green acres is breathtaking. And Shah Rukh's first meeting with Deepika's father over a bridge over a fast-flowing river is shot with amazing brio. 

There's a wonderfully-shot sequence where Shah Rukh has to carry Deepika to a temple over hundreds of steps. Deepika here goes from amusement and mockery to a sense of belonging and pride in her man's arms. It's a moment built with care and love. 

But then, such tender affection really has no place in this comedy of cultural dispossession where the Punjabi boy Rahul gets embroiled in Tamil girl Meena's family affairs and comes out. . . . well not quite wiser. But filled with self-mocking laughter. 

Shah Rukh pokes a whole lot of goodnatured fun at his now-aging lover-boy persona. There are tongue-in-cheek references to Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge and several other Shah Rukh Khan films and songs including the introductory South Indian lines from the Jiya jale song in Dil Se. 
All these self-tributes work better than what Puri Jagganath did with the Bachchan persona Buddha. . . . Hoga Tera Baap. Rohit Shetty is more in command of his canvas here than in his last comedy Bol Bachchan. 

But the self-deprecatory laughter is still not good enough. Somewhere you feel the one-line plot (okay, if not one then two-line plot) is stretched into an unwelcome second-half where nothing really happens. Even the humour tracks stops short beyond a point. 

But there is some genuine steam and spark in the early part of Chennai Express. Towards the beginning of the train journey when Deepika and Shah Rukh play a kind of antakshari of Hindi film songs to put the goons off her trail, Deepika completely overshadows her kingly co-star, who should be okay with being upstaged by his female co-star.

After all he has given Deepika priority over his own name in the credit titles. 
And Deepika takes the lead very seriously. She has never looked better and never been funnier on screen without even trying too hard. 

But then the plot and the situations let her down. The antakshari-speak that was amusing in the beginning recurs during a stale fight sequence in the second-half. 

We are no longer laughing. Not when Shah Rukh's purported big chase sequences end in embarrassing deadends. Not when an item song with incoherent words and even more misguided logistics pops up like a joke whose punchline has gone missing. Through all of this Shah Rukh Khan braves it with a delicious sense of self-mockery bordering almost on a masochistic absence of heroic pride. 

Yes, he likes it when the joke is on him. But that happens once too often here. 
So it's finally here. The film that all Shah Rukh Khan fans (which covers half the hemisphere) has been waiting for. The good news first. "Chennai Express" is a pleasant and likable film in parts. The bad news is, it does nothing for Shah Rukh Khan's imdomitable star power except to tell us he can still play a 40-year Rahul without faltering. That we already know.

Deepika knows to be competitive in healthy way

Deepika Padukone, whose father was a badminton champion, uses the spirit of sportsmanship while working in filmdom and says she knows how to be competitive in a positive manner.

One of the A-list actresses, she has some good projects in hand like "Chennai Express" with Shah Rukh Khan and "Rana" with southern superstar Rajinikanth.

"I think there are two ways to look at it. Everybody doesn't get to do each and every film. I don't compete with others; I compete with myself. I have been an athlete, a sportsperson; so I know how to be competitive in a healthy way," Deepika, a former badminton player whose father, Prakash Padukone, was a national badminton champion and won the coveted All-England badminton crown, told IANS in an exclusive interview.

This year she had only one release, the commercially successful "Cocktail". She says it is difficult to predict what will work at the box office.
"Many a time, a most predictable film doesn't work, while the least expected films click at the box office. So everything is in the hands of the audience. I don't demarcate any film. If a film does well and gets into the Rs.100 crore club, well and good. But I want the audience to appreciate my quality of work," she said.

Her forthcoming film is "Race 2", in which she has teamed up with Saif Ali Khan yet again after working with him in hits like "Love Aaj Kal", "Aarakshan" and "Cocktail".

She hopes movie buffs appreciate their chemistry in the the fast-paced thriller.

"Saif is fun to work with. We have worked in four films together and I share a comfort level with him. The most exciting part is that all the four films are completely different from one another."

"He is a very spontaneous actor. You never know what to expect from him. The audience have liked our chemistry before and, hopefully, they will appreciate it again in 'Race 2'," she said and clarified that they never planned to work together; "it just happened".

"Race 2" is a multi-starrer with big names like Anil Kapoor and John Abraham vying for their space.

Asked what prompted her to be part of the film, Deepika said: "I really liked 'Race' and that excited me to be part of the film. Besides, I like the working style of Abbas-Mustan. The character that I play in the film is also different. I play a very manipulated and very aggressive woman, which I have not played before."
"Race 2" may be a sequel to 2008 hit "Race", but for Deepika it is "an independent film".

"Yes, there is a flow in the story but I joined the crew in 'Race 2'; so it doesn't affect my work anyway," she added.

In the film, the 26-year-old has some steamy and bold scenes with Saif.

Was she comfortable doing them?

"It's not about being comfortable or uncomfortable; I consider each and every scene the same way. For me, each and every scene stands out and I approach each and every scene in the same way."

"Race 2" also features Jacqueline Fernandez and Ameesha Patel and is slated for a Jan 25 release.

Deepika regrets not being part of Rockstar

If Deepika Padukone is satisfied after doing romantic comedy 'Cocktail' in 2012, she wishes she had been part of the Ranbir Kapoor starrer 2011 musical hit 'Rockstar'

'I am more than happy I was part of 'Cocktail'. It was the most satisfying experience to do the film. The audience really appreciated me a lot in 'Cocktail',' Deepika told IANS. 'So this year, I am extremely happy about 'Cocktail' and have no regrets. But if you ask me about last year, then yes, I would say, I wish I was part of 'Rockstar'.
The actress had dated Ranbir for some time and even featured with him in the hit movie 'Bachna Ae Haseeno' before parting ways. 'Rockstar', a musical extravaganza that rocked the box office, was helmed by Imtiaz Ali who roped in Pakistani American Nargis Fakhri as Ranbir's love interest in the movie.

If Deepika pats herself for doing 'Cocktail', she candidly admits that some of her films disappointed her. 'I don't regret anything but, yes, I have been disappointed with two to three films that I did in the last two years,' the 26-year-old said. 'I put equal amount of effort to each and every film but when it doesn't work, it is very disappointing. All of us face ups and downs in our lives, but all we can do is we can learn from our experiences.'
However, she refused to name those disappointing films, saying it would be 'unfair to name any films because ultimately it's me who had chosen the film ... so I would never name them'.

Deepika: Yeh Jawaani... character closer to my real self not Veronica

Actress Deepika Padukone, whose performance as Veronica was highly appreciated in "Cocktail", says her character in her upcoming film "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani" is more close to her real self. 

"Actually 'Yeh Jawani...' is very similar to me in person like Veronica was not. 

I think Veronica, as a character, as a person is very different from how I am personally but 'Yeh Jawani...' is very similar to how I am," the 27-year-old said here Sunday at the Big Star Entertainment Awards. 

Directed by Ayan Mukerji, "Yeh Jawaan Hai Deewani" also stars Ranbir Kapoor and Kalki Koechlin. 
Asked about her supposed tussle with actress Anushka Sharma, Deepika said, "There is no truth to this and I always wish her well." 

Apparently, the two actresses are vying for the lead role opposite Salman Khan in "Kick", which has led to a tussle between Anushka and Deepika.

Deepika Padukone's beauty basics

Actor Deepika Padukone was recently seen at the launch of a beauty cream, playing the perfect youth icon with her young and vibrant attitude and beautiful, clear skin. 

B-S caught up with her to find out her beauty secrets, her thoughts on ageing and how she stays in touch with her athletic side:

Positive plans
I don't do much for my skin actually. But before leaving home in the morning, I make sure that I apply a moisturiser and an SPF to protect my skin. Also, I consciously drink a lot of water and try and have balanced, healthy meals throughout the day. I try and pack in a workout as well as it's very important for blood circulation and it makes you feel good. You feel very happy and positive. 

Moderation is okay
What is dieting? I think the concept of dieting is misunderstood. People feel that dieting means starving, but it is actually just eating healthy and eating correctly. I eat healthy and don't starve myself. Of course, I indulge once in a while.

I am a human being and have my tendencies to want to eat chocolate and dessert. But anything in moderation is okay.

But to tell you the truth, I don't just have a sweet tooth. I think all my teeth are sweet! (laughs) Earlier, I had a weakness only for chocolate. But now, I like all kinds of sweets and desserts. 
Ageing gracefully
I do believe in ageing gracefully, but I also think that it is important to take care of yourself. I think Indian women have a tendency of neglecting themselves. For them, it's always about their husbands, children, family, relatives and work. They rarely make time for themselves. And your 'me' time is very important. 

Let's work it out
With my busy shooting schedule, it is a little difficult to find time to play badminton often. And that is all the more reason why I enjoy my workouts. They keep me connected with my athletic side. But I would love to play a sport more often. 

Working out or playing a sport gives you a natural glow, but more importantly, it gives you a certain focus and discipline in life.

That is a very distinct difference between those who are sports people and those who are not. It teaches you how to handle everything - yourself, pressure and competition. It gives you some grounding.

Is Deepika over-exposed?

She has done glamorous as well as non-glamorous roles but Deepika Padukone feels sad when people think a glamorous role does not require hard work.

"I think the role is more important. It is a misconception that a glamorous role doesn't require acting talent. It's a bit strange, because I think at the end of the day, any kind of film -- whether it is glamorous or 'de-glam' (non-glamorous) - requires acting. Acting is acting," Deepika told in an exclusive interview.

"For example, people think I gave a brilliant performance as Veronica in 'Cocktail', but it was also a glamorous role. For me, it is about the role and the film, not glamour," she added. 

The 26-year-old actress made her Bollywood debut with "Om Shanti Om" and has since been part of successful films such as "Bachna Ae Haseeno", "Housefull", "Love Aaj Kal" and "Cocktail".
For Deepika, it is important that not only her role is appreciated but the film also does well at the box office. 

"When you set out to do a film, one hopes that your performance is appreciated and the film also goes on to do well. Fortunately with me, in 'Cocktail', I got both. The film did well and the performance was appreciated. I hope this happens in all my films," she said. 

Asked if she fears being over-exposed, Deepika said: "I think as long as you are doing good work, that is the most important thing. I don't think that it can result in over-exposure of any form. Also I am someone who has always believed in quality versus quantity," she said. 

The former model also endorses several brands and has just been made the face of a new range of Garnier products alongside actress Priyanka Chopra.

"Today I could have easily been doing 15-20 brands at a time, but I chose not to do that. I chose to endorse the best in the market," she added. 
With so many films and endorsements in her kitty, does she get time for herself? 

"It's about the kind of lifestyle you lead. I can say that I have been the busiest in my career because I am juggling three films at a time. But I think I know how to conserve my energy, I know where to conserve it and spend it. I think things like my diet, workout, exercise, the water I drink and products I use add to me looking and feeling better," she said.

Deepika Padukone says the action-packed "Race 2" also has dollops of glamour, and says shooting for it has been a great experience. 

"It has been great. 'Race 2' has been a wonderful journey for me. I am very proud of it. The movie is an action thriller, but it also has a lot of glamour. The first film of the franchise did well too," Deepika said on the sidelines of the launch of a new skin cream BB by Garnier, here Friday. 

The actress says the movie is important to her, and she will readily devote adequate time to its promotions. 

"'Race 2' is very important to me, and even its promotion is very important as well," she said. 

Deepika says she shares a good camaraderie with her "Race 2" co-actors; Saif Ali Khan and John Abraham. 
"Saif and I have worked before so that comfort level comes. The same is true for John too," she said. 

About her beauty secrets, the actress says she often uses natural tricks to make her skin look beautiful. 

"I believe that less is more. So a healthy diet, drinking lots of water and adequate sleep really helps. All these things reflect positively on your skin," she said. 

Talking about brand endorsements, she said that she ensures that every brand she decides to endorse is an extension of her personality. 

"I believe that every brand which I endorse has to be an extension of my personality and it has to come naturally," she said.

Deepika riding high in ad world

Deepika Padukone seems to be riding high on success, quite literally. She had been offered to be the ambassador of top automobile brand. Deepika had bagged the ad immediately after Cocktail's release, as the company was impressed with her performance as the audacious Veronica in the film.

After seeing Deepika's brilliant performance in Cocktail, the owners of the brand thought she will be the perfect face for endorsing the brand as she so successfully played the character of a free spirit who lives life on her own terms. Deepika's performance was liked by audiences immensely which made the brand owners even keener on having Deepika as their endorser.

Deepika's spokesperson told us, "When the brand shared their research, we were also pleasantly surprised with the results. It only goes to show that everyone has loved her performance in Cocktail and has identified with the character."

Quite an earful Race 2!

After shortlisting 20 odd tunes for Abbas-Mustan's nex film, Pritam finally picked his favourite 

The soundtrack may not make or break a film's fate at the box office, but it certainly can create a buzz around the project. No wonder that Pritam along with the makers of an upcoming thriller had to work hard at deciding what to finalise for the final cut. 

Buzz is that Pritam had shortlisted 20 odd tunes but had a tough time selecting the final one. A source says, The music director along with Abbas-Mustan and producer Kumar Taurani just didn't know which one to pick.
Creative producer of the film Jay Shewakramanai adds, Pritam presented some tunes to us and we liked them too. However he said he was not entirely happy with them himself and kept rejecting them one by one. He wanted a theme that would become an instant party anthem.

However, once the music director had got his right tune, he couldn't contain his excitement. Jay says, He called us at 1.30 in the night to announce he had found his favourite tune.

Incidentally since the track features the entire cast of the film, choreographer Ahmad Khan had a tough time coordinating the shoot in Turkey.

Deepika Padukone in demand for concert shows

After a hit film and numerous magazine covers, it looks like 2012 has been a great year for Deepika Padukone.

The actor not only got accolades for her role in Cocktail, but also got some cool projects added to her kitty following the Homi Adajania release. And now, busy basking in the glory of the praise, Deepika is being hounded by numerous award shows to dance to the film's hit song 'Angrezi beat'.

A source says, Deepika was praised not only for her acting skills, but also for her look in Cocktail. It also gave her the hit number 'Angrezi beat'.

With award season round the corner, she seems to be in a lot of demand. Adds the source, `Many organizers are in talks with her as they want her to perform to the song. Some of them want to recreate the setting of the film on stage. She may also be carrying the same look from the film.

However, Deepika's schedule as of now is completely packed with Race 2, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (YJHD), Kochadaiyaan and Chennai Express all lined up for 2013 releases.

Currently, she is wrapping up the shoot of YJHD and the tentatively titled Ram Leela. With shoots lined up back-to-back, news about her having finalized any deal with the organizers is yet to surface.

Katrina, Sonakshi, Deepika fighting over Akki

Akshay Kumar's popularity among his leading ladies remains undiminished. For proof, try this. Three of his favourite co-stars Katrina Kaif, Sonakshi Sinha and Deepika Padukone have, in the words of someone close to the project, shown varying degrees of interest in doing the Hindi version of the Tamil Diwali blockbuster Thuppakki which is currently ruling the box-office. 

Now, there could be two other reasons besides Akshay Kumar, in these three lovely ladies' keen interest in doing Thuppakki. The film has broken all previous records in Tamil cinema, exceeding the collections of even the biggest Rajnikanth blockbusters. At the same time, this action-oriented film offers the leading lady a chance to play a boxer. 

We hear three of Akshay's leading ladies feel they're eminently qualified. 

Says our source, After the intense experience of doing Jab Tak Hai Jaan Katrina is at the moment searching for something fun to do in her next project. 

The Thuppakki remake will give her that sense of unwinding. Besides she's been dying to do something with producer Vipul Shah and Akshay Kumar for the longest. She had a fabulous time working with them in Namaste London and since the Namaste London sequel is not happening immediately she is agreeable to taking on the challenge of doing the remake of Thuppakki. 
Deepika Padukone may beat Katrina to it simply by default. 

She was offered the original Tamil film, but could not do it due to date issues. Now Deepika is the top contender for the boxer's role in Hindi, and mainly because she by nature an athlete and has been looking out for a sporty role,  says our source. 

We hear Kajal Aggarwal who plays the lead in the original Tamil film is not eligible for the remake. 

Says our source, The cast will be completely different. Both Vipul and Akshay feel the remake should be completely different in look. Sonakshi Sinha has also expressed interest in the role. 
When contacted producer Vipul Shah completely cut down reports that Parineeti Chopra has been signed opposite Akshay. It could be any of the ladies you've mentioned. We're very sure that the remake would have to be very different from the original. 

Vijay who stars in Thuppakki is a superstar in Tamil cinema. With Akshay the remake will acquire a larger appeal. So yes, the leading lady would be different from the Tamil film.

In fact Vipul's current blue-eyed boy Vidyut Jamwal who played the villain in Vipul's production Force would not encore his villainous role from Thuppakki. 

Asserts Vipul, I will certainly not cast Vidyut as the villain. I am launching him as a hero in Commando. So the villain too would be played by a different actor in the remake. You see, the whole idea is to give the remake of Thuppakki a fresh look. Our director Murugadoss, Akshay and I will lock in on the heroine as soon as we know who can look convincing as a boxer.

One hears Deepika may just beat Katrina and Sonakshi to the role. 
Says the director A Murugadoss, We'll decide who plays the leading lady once we all sit down to discuss the matter. The girl's character will change in Hindi. In the Tamil film she's a funny boxer. She has nothing to do with Mary Kom. In Hindi we will now take references from Mary Kom and give the character more gravity.

Ram Leela: Deepika gets injured while dancing with Ranveer

Deepika Padukone was left bruised after a few high-octane exuberant dance steps with co-star Ranveer Singh 

Apparently, actors getting injured on sets have become a norm in Bollywood and they working despite that has become a trend. Like what Deepika Padukone experienced recently while shooting for a number alongside Ranveer Singh in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's forthcoming film. 

During the shoot, Dippy met with injuries due to some high-adrenaline steps she performed with Ranveer. At the end of the day, her bruised feet from practising on the rough surface were testament to the ordeal of an avant-garde track. Several shots required close contact between both the leads.

And the actress was left with severe swelling and red gashes since Ranveer sported many heavy accessories and piercings in the film. 
Some sequences required Ranveer to hit Deepika's midriff several times - not to mention, swing her around and bang into it as part of the choreography! To add to the pain, the actress was also left with several cuts on her feet by the end of the shoot, says a source close to Bhansali.

However, the actress didn't flinch a bit and continued with her dance routine. She surprised all the crewmembers because she refused to act like a diva,` sums up the source.
