Anurag Kashyap looks forward to work with Big B soon

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap says he grew up wanting to become like megastar Amitabh Bachchan and now looks forward to working with him soon.

"When I as a kid I wanted to grow up and become Amitabh Bachchan. Lot of things happened, but there has been a re-connection now and I am looking forward to make a film with him," the 40-year-old said here Wednesday at the premiere of his film "The Last Act".

Once Kashyap had accused Amitabh of using his clout to delay the former's film "Chittagong", to promote his son Abhishek Bachchan's film "Khelein Him Jee Jaan Sey". The subject of both the films was almost the same.

Kashyap's new production "The Last Act" is co-directed by 12 young filmmakers. The film revolves around a murder mystery where 12 clues have been dropped by the killer. Each director has directed a portion regarding one clue each.

Kashyap says these young filmmakers keep him going.

"I think we have all become old foggies compared to these new, young filmmakers who are more balsy and edgy than us. Their courage shows in their cinema and they work fearlessly," he said.

"We fear if the film will work or not, but they don't have any such fear. These young filmmakers are the ones who keep inspiring us. It's because of them that I also keep going," he added.

Filmmaker Sudhir Mishra is also a part of the project and was involved in the selection of the directors.

No Jumping Jack, no Angry Young Man! Bollywood moves away from labels

`Tragedy King` Dilip Kumar, `Angry Young Man` Amitabh Bachchan and `Jumping Jack` Jeetendra - ever wonder why new age Bollywood stars have no such tags. It`s difficult to pin them down to any label because they experiment not just in terms of scripts but also with their looks.

Take Shah Rukh Khan, for instance. He returned to his classic romantic hero avatar only after seven years for 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan'. And Akshay Kumar, who built his forte as an action star, made a comeback as `dhishoom dhishoom` star also after some years with 'Rowdy Rathore'.

"Earlier, if an actor became popular in a particular genre of the film, they were offered similar kinds of roles every time, which gave rise to such titles. I guess actors today are experimenting a lot," explained film historian SMM Ausaja. 

"Perceptions have changed now. The actors are giving a lot of attention to the script, their look in the film, which is why they don`t get typecast," Ausaja told reporters. 

The current breed of actors like Aamir Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Abhishek Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, Shahid Kapoor, Abhay Deol, Imran Khan and John Abraham bear him out. They are doing anything and everything to keep their filmography varied and experimental. 

Very different indeed from yesteryear actors. 

While Jeetendra`s distinct dancing style earned him the Jumping Jack title, Dharmendra`s love for action sequences landed him the tag of Bollywood`s He-Man. Legendary Guru Dutt was called Matinee Idol, and Dilip Kumar`s repeated portrayal of a doomed lover made him Bollywood`s Tragedy King.

Amitabh`s power-packed and action-oriented performances made him the Angry Young Man. And Mithun Chakraborty revolutionised the way actors grooved and was tagged the Dancing Star.
Then came in Shah Rukh, who changed the way romance was portrayed on screen. With most of his hits being romances, he came to be known as the King of Romance. But he moved away from the label, trying to do different things, like playing a superhero in "Ra.One" or by recasting the lover profile.

He said he has tried to portray the role of a lover boy in a different way, each time.

The actor feels these titles are a way to simplify things.

"We bracket everything very quickly. Like a lover boy, action hero, romantic hero...We always look for genres to simplify things," said Shah Rukh.

"But I am happy that I got a chance to work with so many actors, who taught me so much and I got to perform the role of a lover boy in a different way. Every time I could add something new to it and entertain people," he added. 

According to filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, tags are mere creations by the media. Since there were few actors earlier, it was easy to label them into specific genres. 

"These kind of labels are all media generated. These labels were created by the media, may be without the willingness of these stars. During those days (yesteryear era), we didn`t have too much entertainment media, so there was very little choice and they created the label," Bhatt told reporters.
"Over the years things have changed and market has taken over in numbers. Bollywood got some respectability and the huge weekend collections changed the ball game. And these labels have vanished," he added. 

Actors are now not just happy expanding their expertise in handling different roles but are also entering the music scene, production scene and going behind the camera.

Besharam Ranbir-Rishi to do an Amitabh-Abhishek

Although Rishi Kapoor and his son Ranbir are finally coming together in Abhinav Kashyap's Besharam they won't be sharing any screen space in the film! Yes, the father and son, long desirous of being seen together, are finally working in the same film. 

But not together!

Instead in Besharam Ranbir will play a deadly cat-and-mouse game with his father Rishi Kapoor and Ranbir's mom Neetu Kapoor. 

Says a source, Ranbir is cast as an outlawed con-person operating in and around Delhi. Rishi and Neetu Kapoor play a couple of cops pursuing Ranbir's character all through the film. It's like Bachchan Saab's cop- character in Shaad Ali's Bunty Aur Babli pursuing his own son Abhishek, though they're not father and son. 
The difference, we are told, is that the father and son Bachchan did come together in Bunty Aur Babli for the iconic Kajra re number. In Besharam as the script stands, the Rishi-Neetu Kapoor pair never run in their own son in the entire narrative. 

In fact Ranbir is very clear on the father-son issue. He will play his father's son only when he turns director for their home banner R. K. Films. 
Incidentally Ranbir Kapoor goes into Besharam without finishing his current film Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani. A source close to director Ayan Mukerjee confirms that they have 20 more days of shooting to complete, though the film has already gone on the editing table. 

Says the source, Ayan has to shoot two songs with Ranbir and Deepika. These would be shot in January. Then after that there will be one more song to shoot. It will be done somewhere down the line.

Shatrughan Sinha keen on film with Big B

Shatrughan Sinha, fondly known as Shotgun, is keen on doing a film with Amitabh Bachchan. The two are said to have discussed various possibilities of coming together, and a project is now being designed for them.

"We haven't worked together since 'Shaan' and 'Kaala Patthar'. It would be really nice to work with him again. He's a good actor and a fine human being," said Shatrughan.

"After my heart surgery, (one of) my first social outing was to his 70th birthday party. I told him I wouldn't have stepped out to such a crowded gathering for anyone else. I broke my golden health rule for a golden human being," he added.

The veteran actor-turned-politician is very impressed by Akshay Kumar.

"He has been very inspiring in his good-health talk. He came here and very humbly told me how important it is to eat sleep and exercise well. I am now on to a different routine altogether. I wake up very early in the morning, go for a long walk.

"I'll be resuming my yoga very soon. Late nights are completely out. Not that I partied late anyway," said the 67-year-old, who underwent surgery earlier this year.

As soon as Shatrughan is back to completely normalcy, he will start a film with Akshay.

"It's a subject that he has been desirous of doing with me for a long time. Akshay came and told me, 'Sir, ab to meri baat maan lijiye (Agree to me now at least)'. I've agreed. But he has laid down a pre-condition. Akshay says our shooting shifts would be 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. I am game," he said.

Never forget your past, says Big B

He hails from the small town of Allahabad, but has made it big like no other. Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, known worldwide for his acting prowess, believes it always helps to stay close to one's roots.

The 70-year-old feels it is important that everyone remembers the beginning of their career as it helps them to face tough times.

"Many beginnings of our lives are easily forgotten when there has been extreme progress ... in our condition. I believe being in honest touch with your start up days, it's circumstances and conditions keeps one grounded with reality," Big B wrote on his blog.

Amitabh has given the film industry blockbusters like "Deewaar", "Don", "Sholay", "Coolie", "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham..." and "Black".

However, the actor says he went through a lot of struggle during his over four decade-old Bollywood career. He feels the lessons learnt from bad experiences always help in life.

"The humble days of yore, of hardships and how they were overcome, tests and trials, embarrassing rejections ... all go to play an important role in the days to come or the present times.

It is good to remember every now and then where we began from," he added.

Bollywood's enduring 786 connect

The number 786, revered in Islamic culture, has found prominence in Bollywood over and over again -- remember Amitabh Bachchan's 'billa No.786' in "Coolie" and Shah Rukh Khan's 'qaidi No.786' in "Veer-Zaara". It returns to the screen with Akshay Kumar's "Khiladi 786". 

The number is said to be the total value of the letters 'Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim' (in the name of Allah, the compassionate, the merciful), according to one Arabic system of numerology. In Bollywood, quick to pick on what strikes an emotive note with superstitious viewers, 786 has been used either as a connotation for a character's invincibility or to denote how a truly god-blessed soul overcomes tough times.

In reality, however, the number is just a "ritualistic reference"; no more than that, says Firoz Bakht Ahmed, teacher and community worker. 

"There is no doubt this number, 786, remains a holy number in the subcontinent, but it started as a trend. And now it has common acceptance.

"It is not some kind of force to reckon with. It just has a face value and has a ritualistic reference to it, just like there is an Om, a Trishul and a Swastika... it is no more than that," Ahmed, a grandnephew of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, told. 

"It is just indicative of a belief. Like Sikhs say 'Wahe guru' to save themselves from evil, many people use 786 for the same reason. It doesn't mean it is god in itself and nothing can happen to you," he explained. 

But for Bollywood filmmakers, still enough to forge that emotional connect. 
In the 1975 film "Deewaar", Amitabh Bachchan's character Vijay Verma carried a '786' billa with him in his pocket all the time. In the 1983 film "Coolie", the magic carried through and the megastar's character Iqbal Khan sported 'billa no. 786' on his uniform. 

Obviously, the number's mystical powers were woven into the story. 

"786 - in 'Deewaar', the 786 billa in his coat pocket saved him when he was shot at... when it dropped out in the climax, he was shot and died. In the 'Coolie' climax, the 'chaadar' draped over his body though shot at, saved him," Big B had once shared with his fans on Twitter. 

In a transference from the reel to the real, many fans believed that it was 786 that saved Amitabh from his near-fatal accident on the sets of "Coolie". Thereafter, the number gained immense popularity in the country. 
Film historian SMM Ausaja notes: "The number gained popularity after its intelligent use in Yash Chopra's 'Deewaar', and subsequently it attained a cult status in the socio-cultural fads. In fact, eight years later in 1983, the number re-emerged in 'Coolie' - a film which completed a mind-boggling 75-week run across major metros."

"Amitabh sported this number on his badge. Even the logo of the film had this number in one 'O' of Coolie. We also saw a pacemaker with this number in Ketan Desai's 'Allah Rakha' (1986). Not just car number plates, even mobile phone numbers bearing these digits are charged a premium by the operators," he added.

There are other examples too. 

Chiranjeevi sported the number in the Telugu film "Khaidi No.786", while Shah Rukh's character Veer Pratap Singh in "Veer-Zaara" also bore the prisoner number 786. The registration number of Ajay Devgn's car in the movie "Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai" was MRH 786. 

The tradition continues with the upcoming "Khiladi 786", in which action star Akshay Kumar apparently has '786' etched on the destiny line of his palm.
"It denotes that Akshay's character Bahattar Singh has 'Allah ki rahmat' (Allah's blessings) and how when he gets bruised, there is some upheaval all around. There is only an undertone of the number in the film, it has not been exaggerated," Rakesh Upadhyay, the film's creative producer, told.

Do filmmakers use it as a matter of superstition?

"It is not a superstition, it's an auspicious number in the Islamic context; therefore when you have a Muslim character, associating this number with any scene or incident enhances its impact," said Ausaja.

Five Bollywood stars feature at Madame Tussauds Washington

Incredibly life-like wax figures of five Hindi cinema legends, including megastar Amitabh Bachchan and superstar Shah Rukh Khan, will be on display at Madame Tussauds Washington D.C. through the end of the year as part of a travelling Bollywood exhibit at the famed wax attraction.

Two colourfully dressed dancers in turquoise and shiny gold sequined outfits will sway and swing in synchronous rhythm as they perform a fusion of traditional and modern Indian dances to help launch the new exhibit here Tuesday. 

The exhibit features Amitabh, regarded as one of the most influential actors in the history of Indian cinema, Shah Rukh, one of Bollywood's most renowned actors and often referred to as 'King Khan', and Aishwarya Rai, one of the leading contemporary actresses of Indian cinema who was featured in the blockbuster action thriller "Dhoom 2". 

Also featured are Hrithik Roshan, acclaimed actor and recipient of numerous best actor awards, and Kareena Kapoor, who is noted for her performances across a range of film genres - from romantic dramas and comedies to independent films and major Bollywood productions. 
The dancers, from the Rhythmaya School of Dance, will open the event with a brief performance combining elements of both traditional and modern Indian dance styles, according to a media release. 

Rhythmaya is a contemporary dance instruction and performance group dedicated to keeping South Asian dance traditions alive, and specialises in teaching Indian dance forms in a style that speaks to people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.

Big B wants some rest

Work commitments are keeping megastar Amitabh Bachchan on his toes these days. The 70-year-old is craving for some time at home and wanted to spend some quality time in the arms of Jaya.

"Back from glorious Marrakech...into the Isles and soon to depart for Florence Film Festival and a retrospective of films...honoured. Far too much travel, far too many jet lags, far too many time differences of time, far too many hotel rooms...home beckons," tweeted Big B.

The actor was at the Marrakech International Film Festival as part of a Bollywood delegation to attend a special tribute for hundred years of Indian cinema. He is now heading for the River To River 2012 Indian Film Festival in Florence, where a retrospective of his films will be held.

Rafi sang great songs without technological support, says Big B

Praising legendary singer Mohammad Rafi, megastar Amitabh Bachchan has said it was amazing how Rafi saab sang as melodiously as he did in absence of technology.

Big B spoke at the launch of "Mohammed Rafi My Abba - A Memoir", a book written by the singer's daughter-in-law Yasmin Rafi, here Sunday.

"When we look at the great amount of work that he has left behind, we must be astonished now because Rafi saab rendered the songs at a time when the support of the technology was not there," said Amitabh.

"Today's music directors and technicians and singers, with all due respect, have the benefit of technology. You sing slightly 'besura' and there is a lovely machine that puts you in tune," added the 70-year-old, who has himself crooned some of his own songs.

The actor says he has great admiration for Rafi, "because he lived through a time and performed through a time when he was not supported by the modern technology that we have today".

Amitabh also spoke of Rafi's versatility, and recalled how he used to mould his voice according to the actor he sang for.

"Before singing a song for a particular actor, he used to ask, 'Which actor am I singing this for?' Then he would alter his voice or do something. Whether he was singing for Shammiji (Kapoor), whether he was singing for Dilip saab (Kumar), you felt that yes, this is Dilip Kumar singing or Shammi Kapoor singing. This is a quality which is very rare among the playback singers," he said.

Rafi is known for songs like "Chaudhvin ka chand", "Teri aankhon ke siva" and "Tum jo mil gaye ho".

While most of our celebs are satisfied with posting tweets on their favourite topics and condoling deaths of well-known personalities, Amitabh Bachchan has gone a step ahead and has used the online medium to enlighten and inform us 

Recently, it was Big B who cleared the air over Pran's health tweeting: 'Paid a visit to Pran Saheb in hospital.. he is fine.. spent an hour with him joking and talking of times past and present..' He also added, 'All those making speculative remarks on Pran Saheb being critical.. get your facts right before going public.. most irresponsible' 
Bachchan's tweet on the late Bal Thackeray was also touching. 'When I fought for my life after 'Coolie' accident, he came to visit me in hospital, with a cartoon he had drawn - Yamraj defeated!, ' Big B revealed 

The superstar was also gracious enough to tweet pics of granddaughter Aaradhya's first birthday. 'Aaradhya on her 1st birthday with her Father... thank you all for the blessings and love, ' the tweet read 
Even the news of Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan coming under one roof for the 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan' premiere was given out by the Sr Bachchan. 'Danced my shoes off with all the youngsters.. an amazing evening... spending time with Salman, Aamir, Shahrukh, Katrina and Anushka, ' tweeted the actor following the premiere. Big B's tweet raised hopes of a possible patch up between SRK and Salman. Alas, it wasn't to be 
It was thanks to Bachchan again that we came to know the last words of late superstar Rajesh Khanna. 'Time ho gaya hai, pack up'. Those were Kaka's last words, the 70-year-old actor revealed on his blog 

Even the news of bahu's Aishwarya's pregnancy was confirmed by Big B on Twitter. 'News news news!! I am going to become a grandfather..Aishwarya expecting..so happy and thrilled!!!, ' he has posted last year 
In May this year, Bachchan confirmed the name of his granddaughter on Twitter following six months of speculations. 'My granddaughter is called Aaradhya', the proud grandpa posted 

Of course, the Bachchan has had his oops moment as well. His congratulatory tweet on boxer Mary Kom, in which he inadvertently referred to the sports person from Manipur as a 'mother of two from Assam' received a lot of backlashes. The veteran actor even threatened to quit Twitter over the malfunctioning of the micro-blogging site, but has stayed on.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan is SRK's best after Swades: Big B

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who attended the star-studded premiere of late Yash Chopra's last directorial "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" (JTHJ), can't stop singing praises about the film. He feels lead actor Shah Rukh Khan has delivered one of his best performances.

"Each portion poetry, each artist at his and her best, and for Shah Rukh, his best performance after 'Swades', " the 70-year-old posted on his blog.

Also starring Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma, JTHJ released Tuesday.

Bollywood bigwigs came together under one roof at the Yash Raj Films (YRF) studio for the premiere of the movie here Monday night.

Yash Chopra, who took to direction for the movie after a gap of eight years, passed away Oct 21 following dengue and multi-organ failure.

The premiere was planned to be a perfect farewell to Chopra, who entertained legions of movie buffs through his 40 years in the Hindi film industry.

Amitabh says the studio was done in a magical way just for the premiere.

"The studio floor was converted into a theatre and film projection was conducted there and then. An unbelievable setting of Baroque and modern, tiered as in some prestigious halls anywhere in the world.

"And the film and stand alone theatre built of such period architecture, reflecting the carving original of the columns, and the entire ambience in the style of some old castle in early Europe.

"It was magical... just the way Yashji would have wanted, " Amitabh said.

It was a memorable evening for Big B, who worked with Chopra in films like "Silsila" and "Deewaar".

"Danced my shoes off with all the youngsters... an amazing evening... spending time with Salman (Khan), Aamir (Khan), Shah Rukh, Katrina (Kaif) and Anushka (Sharma), " he added.

Big B moved by courage of acid attack victim

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan is blown over by the grit and strength of an acid attack victim, a female from Jharkhand, whom he met while shooting for a special episode of his game show "Kaun Banega Crorepati 6" (KBC).

"It has been a most traumatic and disturbing evening on the sets of KBC, where we have recorded the special episode called 'doosra mauka' - a second chance, for those that are afflicted by horrendous acts of violence," Amitabh wrote on his blog srbachchan.tumblr.com.

"Sonali Mukherjee from Jharkhand, a pretty young girl was harassed by three boys in her neighbourhood and when she repelled their unwanted advances towards her, they threw acid on her face and destroyed it," he added.

In the attack, Mukherjee lost her eyes, hearing and speech. She was accompanied by actress Lara Dutta, who works towards helping women in distress.

Though hearing about the ghastly act left Amitabh disturbed, he is amazed by the her courage.

"The three boys are out on bail. Sonali has through sheer grit and strength fought for her survival for nine years, has had 22 surgeries done to repair her face and still has a long way to go," the 70-year-old said.

"Denied of justice, she pleaded publicly to end her life through the process of euthanasia. Denied of that too because euthanasia is illegal in the country, she decided to not remain silent and suffer."

"She is now able to speak, hear, but cannot see. Her story is one of immense courage and fortitude. The nation salutes her as do all of us, but simultaneously hangs its head in shame for this dastardly act - an ugly reminder of the kind of evil that exists in our society," he added.

Big B reminisces about Yash Chopra

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan met late filmmaker Yash Chopra's wife Pamela at their house here and went down memory lane.

"Went and spent sometime with Pam, Yashji's wife at their house... so many memories attached to this place," Big B tweeted.

Yash Chopra died Oct 21 following multi-organ failure. He was 80.

Amitabh did some of his most memorable projects including "Kabhi Kabhie", "Deewaar", "Trishul" and "Silsila" with the iconic filmmaker, who redefined romance on the screen, and gave the Big B his 'angry young man' tag.

Sonakshi, Ajay play KBC for Salman's Being Human

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan will soon be seen quizzing actors Sonakshi Sinha and Ajay Devgn on his 'Kaun Banega Crorepati 6' game show and the two will donate the winning amount to Salman Khan's charitable organisation Being Human

Ajay and Sonakshi will come to promote their forthcoming movie 'Son Of Sardaar' (SOS) on the sets of the game show. Directed by Ashwni Dhir, 'Son Of Sardaar' will release Nov 13. Big B wrote about the special episode on his blog.

'And as you can see had the lead pair of ?Son of Sardar? their latest film on release - Ajay Devgn and Sonakshi Sinha?s, who came over to play for Salman Khan?s charity Being Human at KBC ? and Sonakshi teaching us a few elementary dance moves from the film..., ' he said in his message. Big B gets best TV host award for KBC

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has won the best television host award for the popular game show 'Kaun Banega Crorepati'

How did it happen? It's the People's Choice Award by Colors channel for the best television host for KBC. Thank you all, who voted for me, ' tweeted Amitabh.

First aired in 2000, KBC hosted by Amitabh marked his maiden appearance on Indian television. The sixth season is currently on air on Sony. Big B has hosted five seasons, except for the third one, which saw actor Shah Rukh Khan playing host. The 70-year-old has previously won the Indian Telly Awards, BIG Television Awards, The Global Indian Film and TV Honours among others.

A fan waits 27 years to meet Big B

Amitabh Bachchan was overwhelmed after meeting a fan from eastern European nation Moldova, who waited 27 years to meet the Hindi movie megastar.

"Vera from Moldova waited for 27 years to meet me... finally did today with 27 roses and a host of gifts... persistence never fails," Amitabh tweeted.

The 70-year-old says he's at loss of words to see the love and affection that people show for him.

"I never have sufficient verbology to respond to such acts of love... so humbled and stumped for words...!!" he added.

Moldova is a landlocked nation located between Romania and Ukraine.

Talking about another crazy fan, Big B wrote: "Another Russian girl became a drug dealer to earn money to travel to see me in India... got caught and is in jail... aahh! Painful."

"I had sent her a video message through a TV crew not to have done this... had she expressed it to me could have found a way," he added.

Big B hooked to Radha song

Amitabh Bachchan is hooked on to the "Radha" song from Karan Johar's "Student of the Year" (SOTY).

The megastar went out for dinner with family, but was caught in traffic, Wednesday due to Durga idol immersion. And the actor had the Radha song played on repeat mode in his car.

"'Radha' from SOTY keeps us company and on repeat... the mood is happy and charged with rhythm," Big B wrote on his blog.

The traffic was such that a police car came to whisk Amitabh out of the jam.

"Returning back home causes happy problems ...traffic is jammed and there is recognition and mobbing... it gets impossible to move... the police squad car moves in and with great difficulty extricates us to pilot us home," he added.

The actress was floored by the youngster's performance in his debut film 'Student of the Year'

Ameesha Patel was recently spotted at a private screening for Varun Dhawan's film Student Of The Year. After watching the film, the hot actress was full of praises for director Karan Johar for his guts on going all out and promoting his product a great youthful entertaining film on such a large canvas with new comers.
Ameesha feels Karan is a great example for other producers who want to launch new comers in the industry. The actress has met Varun a couple of times. She is all praise for him and feels that he would make it big the moment she saw him on screen.

Amitabh, Jaya pose together for magazine

Star couple, megastar Amitabh Bachchan and his wife Jaya, decked up in designer wear to pose together for picture perfect moments for a popular magazine.

"A photo shoot for Hello with the wife. Stunning pictures by Ram (Shergill) and dressed up by Abu-Sandeep (Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla). Should be out soon, " tweeted the 70-year-old veteran.

Amitabh and Jaya married in 1973. They have two children, Shweta and Abhishek, and three grandchildren - Navya Naveli, Agastya and Aaradhya.

Big B recently celebrated his 70th birthday, and he is still receiving gifts from across the world.

"Russian fans present an exquisite gift... stitched portraits of Abhishek and me. Simply outstanding work of art and patience, " he tweeted.
