Director Milan Luthra who describes his leading lady as an "enigmatic and powerhouse performer" said that the actress was his first choice to play the free-spirited heroine in the drama set in the 70's.
"The film set in the 70's is a rewind to the era of romance, smuggling, cabaret and the mafia. A time when women had a liberated air to them, were fearless and bold.
If anyone could carry the part of Ajay Devgn's love interest in the film, Rehana, it was Kangana Ranaut," he said.
According to him Kangana fitted the role perfectly because she has a great body and her face is "chameleon-like", she can change into different looks everyday.
Kangana, who worked hard on her look in the film, studied the fads and trends of the 70's not just in Bollywood but even in the West, he said. Once upon a time in Mumbaai starring Ajay Devgn, Emraan Hashmi and Kangana Ranaut is all set to release worldwide on July 30.
