Who is the Indian Julia Roberts?

A look at the top female stars of Bollywood and the People's Choice Awards

Julia Roberts is known to be the most famous Hollywood female movie star. Incidentally, in the US, she has been the recipient of 13 People's Choice Awards (PCA), a record number of wins by any actress. As a versatile actress, she won eighth of these awards for Favourite Motion Picture Actress and others included Favourite All Around Female Entertainer and even Favourite Smile once.

Shifting focus from Hollywood to Bollywood, we have three actresses who are also catching people's attention around the world - Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif and Kareena Kapoor Khan.

Their global appeal translates into blockbuster ticket sales not only in India but also from fans living outside the country. In their last four films as leading ladies, they have collectively amassed around Rs 1, 500 crore at the box office.

Some of these hits include Priyanka in Dharma Productions' Agneepath, Katrina in YRF's Ek Tha Tiger and Kareena in Red Chillies' RA.One. All three of these top female Bollywood superstars are an integral part of the first Annual People's Choice Awards.

Last month, Priyanka launched the PCAs in India, unveiling the trophy, and subsequently gave a heartwarming tribute performance to legendary director Yash Chopra at the main event. Bebo also showed her moves while performing on her hit numbers Main Heroine Hoon and Halkat Jawaani. Katrina felicitated the London Olympics 2012 medal winners from India in a special honour bestowed by PCA.

Most people are unaware that Kat, who has now become one of the most sought after actresses in Bollywood, has been involved in more than 30 films in a career spanning a decade. Katrina was nominated at the PCAs in India for Ek Tha Tiger alongside Parineeti Chopra (Ishaqzaade), Vidya Balan (Kahaani) and Sonakshi Sinha (Rowdy Rathore) for 'Favourite Movie Actress', a category which is featured as the most popular amongst the public.
When asked about her nomination, Katrina said at the PCA Red Carpet, It's a public vote. So, I think, it's voted for, by the audience. And that's what has always been important to me. I think it's the audience who have to actually come and see your films. It's the first, if I am not mistaken, awards show of the season. So, let's see. It's an interesting award. I think it's also the first year it's happening.

The People's Choice Awards has been licensed in India by Bulldog Media & Entertainment from Mark Burnett's One Three Media. Bulldog also co-produces the show in India along with Colors and handles the PCA official site (www.PeoplesChoiceIndia. com), voting and social media exclusively.

When we asked Akash Sharma, Co-founder & MD of Bulldog about the public vote, he said, Since we are now the first awards show of the season, we fixed the nominations to be in the period between September 1, 2011 and August 31, 2012.

For our first year in India, the categories were adapted from the US, nominees were chosen by Ormax market research and were then put up for public voting. From next year, we will look at also having the public choose the nominees, as we do in the US. And eventually, even certain categories will be chosen by the people, once the PCA brand is established in India.

The winners of the People's Choice Awards will be revealed on Sunday, November 25 at 9 pm on Colors.
