Chunky enjoys humour connect with young fans

Actor Chunky Pandey is loving this phase of his career. He says his recent, light-hearted roles have given him a chance to connect with young audience members, a joy he missed in the initial years of his career.

He has played comic roles like Rana Jang Bahadur in 2006 film "Apna Sapna Money Money" and was recently seen playing the character of Aakhri Pasta in Sajid Khan's "Houseful" series.

"Somehow most of my fans are little children and I love that. When I started my career, I missed out on that generation completely. I went off to Bangladesh, there were little children who used to ask me who I am, and I used to tell them to go and ask their mother who would know me and my films," Chunky told.

"Now it is the little kids who ask for me and I love it. Now children also watch my movies and I perform for them. I am happy that I have that league of kid fans," he added. The 47-year-old, who earlier featured in films like "Paap Ki Duniya" (1988) and "Aankhen" (1992), is currently judging a standup comedy show "Laugh India Laugh" on Life OK.

While many believe making people laugh is a tough deal, Chunky feels otherwise, and says standup comedy is way tougher.

"I think it's a very easy thing to make people laugh, especially with a script and then you've just got to dress up. That's also the idea of comedy in Bollywood.

"But in standup comedy, there's a man, with just some content, trying to make everyone laugh. I can't even do for one minute, what these people do for 10 minutes! I see a lot of Raju Srivastavas and Johnny Levers coming up," he said.

What's Chunky's definition of a good comedian?

"I think the first and the most important thing is to look funny. I think you should be able to punctuate things very well, should be able to make people laugh.

"If in the first 30 seconds, a comedian cannot bring a smile to your face, he is not an entertainer," he said.

The actor is busy with his first production venture, a fiction show in Los Angeles. He is also excited about playing another comic character of 3G in "Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum", which hits theatres Friday.

Chunky Pandey to turn producer

After two-and-a-half decades in filmdom, Chunky Pandey is keen to widen his horizon - from comedies he wants to shift to darker films like "D" and he is also contemplating movie production.

"I don't think I have had my fill of comedy, but it requires a lot of guts for someone to cast me in something else. I had done a film for Ram Gopal Verma called 'D' with Randeep Hooda. It was a very dark film and I would like to do something like that," Chunky told.

Without elaborating much about turning producer, he said: "My production plans are very premature as of now. But I am going to produce a film for sure. I can't talk about it just as yet."

I'll miss kids watching my film Kyaa Super Kook Hain Hum: Chunky Pandey

After playing Aakhri Pasta in Sajid Khan's "Housefull", Chunky Pandey will be seen as Baba 3G in sex comedy "Kyaa Super Kook Hain Hum". He says he would regret losing young audiences with the film.

Describing his character as a "fraud who talks to god on the mobile phone", he added humoursly: "I think I will have to leave the country after the film releases because of my character. But it's interesting."

Releasing July 27, "Kyaa Super Kook Hain Hum" has Tusshar Kapoor and Riteish Deshmukh in the lead roles and has been directed by Sachin Yardi.

Talking about the audiences, he said: "The last film I did was a mass entertainer. Kids loved that film and they asked me when I was coming back? And now I can't tell them that I am coming back as Baba 3G in a sex comedy. I will miss the kids watching this film but I am sure that many of them will run away from homes to watch the film."

Comedy is one of the easiest genres, says Chunky and pointed out that "it is all in the writing. If the writing is good and you have a good director, it is good".

The 47-year-old, who started his career as a lead actor in 1987 with "Aag Hi Aag", would be seen in TV show "Laugh India Laugh", which is again a comedy and the actor says he would love to be a part of a non- comedy reality show, but not something like "Bigg Boss".

"I went into 'Bigg Boss' house for two hours to promote my film, and I got scared. That's the only other thing which has been offered to me. I am open to doing other shows as far as it's not a dancing or a singing show," he said.
