Big films to watch out for in 2013

While 2012 saw a spate of Bollywood films at the box office crossing the magic mark of Rs 100 crore, here's hoping the new year too will bring its fair share of moolah-rakers

Some of the big banner names that will battle it out at the BO in 2013 are...

Dhoom 3: The third installment of the Dhoom franchise will see Aamir Khan in a negative light for the first time in his career. Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, who was the writer of the first two installments, the film stars Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra and Katrina Kaif.
Krrish 3: This is the third installment in Hrithik Roshan's Koi...Mil Gaya series, which was followed by Krrish that portrayed India's first very own superhero. The film has Vivek Oberoi and Kangna Ranaut as the baddies.
Chennai Express: This will be Shah Rukh Khan's first with Rohit Shetty, who is great buddies with his bete noire Ajay Devgn.
Radhe: This Salman-starrer will be directed by his brother Sohail Khan, who is making a comeback after nearly eight years. The film is slotted for an Eid release that is considered to be a lucky date for Sallu.
Ram Leela: Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film was initially said to star Ranveer Singh and Kareena Kapoor. Bebo however was later replaced by Deepika Padukone.
Yeh Jaawani Hai Deewani: Post their break-up this film will be Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika's first film together. Helmed by RK's friend Ayan Mukerji, the film's been in the making for quite a while now.

Imran follows the footsteps of uncle Aamir

Actor Imran Khan is following in the footsteps of his uncle Aamir Khan and pasting posters of his new film "Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola" on taxis. Imran recounts the similarity between his way and what Aamir once did.

"Twenty four years ago Aamir uncle pasted the posters of his film 'Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak'. I remember him telling the story that he and my mother were roaming around the by-lanes of Bandra and seeking the permission of rickshaw drivers to paste the posters of his film and telling them that he is the hero of the film," the 29-year-old said while promoting the film.

"Flash forward 24 years and I find myself doing the same thing. Actually in our city public transport is the most important thing whether it is rickshaw, taxis or buses, it has always been the lifeline of the city. I think it is the easiest way to communicate and reach out to the people," he added.
Directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, "Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola" also features Anushka Sharma, Pankaj Kapur and Shabana Azmi. It hits theatres Jan 11.

Aamir is Katrina's secret Santa

Aamir Khan requests producers to delay schedule of 'Dhoom 3' so that actress can enjoy Christmas and New Year with her family

They say home's where the hearth is. And on a cold, winter morning, there is nothing like enjoying some warm moments with the family.

And for that, Katrina Kaif has her co-star Aamir Khan to thank for. Buzz is that Aamir stalled the shoot of their film for a week to let Kat take a break and spend Christmas and New Year with her family in their London home.
A source says, Aamir has been in a remarkable mood. In fact, it was during a casual conversation with the rest of the cast that Katrina mentioned her wish to spend Christmas and New Year with her family.

Initially, the unit was to shoot throughout the last week of the year. Aamir requested the production house to delay the shoot so that Kat could take her holiday.
So while the actress is still practising her stunts for the action-thriller, the next schedule of the film has been set for February. Bon voyage to Katrina, then!

Box Office: Khiladi 786 fails to impress, Talaash rakes in the moolah

Akshay Kumar's Khiladi 786 was one of the most awaited releases of the year. While the film scored on its music and good reviews, it had a rather average opening

However, Sunday brought in smiles for its investors and the film is expected to pick up, thanks to the word-of-mouth. It has raked in about Rs 34 crore in its opening weekend (Friday Rs 10. 05 cr, Saturday Rs 11. 25 cr and Sunday Rs 12. 75 cr).
On the other hand, Talaash has collected around Rs 74. 47 crore in its first 10 days, making it the biggest hit in the thriller genre.

Life of Pi meanwhile stands at 0 Rs 23. 50 crore till the last weekend. Trade analyst Amod Mehra says, The film did not open as expected and while it was good in single screens, it was average in multiplexes.

The second day was similar but it took a good jump on Sunday. The good part is that it has a clear week before Dabangg 2, which will help its box office collections.
He adds, I think the biggest reason for its average opening was that people thought Akshay was only playing a special appearance and it was a Himesh Reshammiya film.

On the other hand, trade expert Atul Mohan says, The opening has been shocking to say the least. While everyone has loved the film, it has not reflected in the collections.

However with the rise in Sunday's collections, the film should sustain and turn out to be an earning film for everyone. It is a complete potboiler and that should help.

'I wept several times while shooting for 'Satyamev Jayate' and the shooting had to be halted. It was terrible when common people narrated their woes.

'Even when I go abroad, I feel homesick and start weeping,' he said. The actor added that police had provided security to Mahvish, widow of Abdul Hakim, a resident of Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh who was apparently killed by his wife's family.

The couple had appeared in an episode of 'Satymev Jayate' and spoken against honour killings. Aamir said all five accused in the killing have been arrested and Mahvish, who is pregnant, was now getting police protection.

Talaash is not a universal film: Aamir Khan

Bollywood star Aamir Khan knows his latest release "Talaash" does not cater to a universal audience, but he is glad with the response it has received.

"'Talaash' is not a universal film. There is a supernatural element in this film and it was a risky film to make. Around 80 to 90 per cent of the audience liked the film," Aamir told reporters here.

He says his next release "Dhoom 3" is a universal project.

"Even kids will like that film. But 'Talaash' has got a different audience," said Aamir.

"But I am glad that the film has opened so well and is doing good business at the box office. What made me really happy was that the emotion that I went through while shooting for the film, even the audience went through the same emotion while watching it," he added.

Aamir, who plays a police officer in the movie, says "Talaash" has a repeat value.

"I don't think that a suspense drama does not have any repeat value. In fact, the audience is liking the film more when they are watching it for the second or third time. The film has not got 100 percent positive response as many people may not like the supernatural films, but 'Talaash' has repeat value," he said.

Aamir feels the movie will inspire filmmakers to push their creative boundaries.

"I am happy that the audience is liking this films. It is a very difficult film to make. When such film work at the box office, it pushes the boundaries for the creative people to explore their talent," he said.

He says the team behind "Talaash" is not planning a sequel as of now.

Directed by Reema Kagti and penned by Zoya Akhtar, "Talaash" also features Rani Mukerji and Kareena Kapoor.

In Talaash, Kareena gives Aamir something he really needs. And it's not Sex. it's Sleep

Reema Kagti's Talaash is a winner. Opening across India at around 60-75 percent attendance, the film's attendance showed a steep leap on Sunday. By Monday the verdict was clear. Talaash had collected a whopping 57.50 crore rupees in India. Exhausted after the release Reema speaks to Bollywood-Stop of the success.

Party time?
Ha ha, not yet. I think I will be more comfortable celebrating next week. But the film's success means I can be what I want to be as a filmmaker, make the films that I want to. I think I've achieved what I set out to achieve.

Someone tweeted from Chennai said I got a standing ovation at the end of a screening. I hope he wasn't pulling my leg. Of course there are adverse reactions. Talaash is a film evoking extreme reactions. Either people love or hate it.

I hope for the sake of the entire team that the film works. If such films work then others are encouraged to try something different.

There are actually 3 plots in Talaash about Aamir and the murder mystery. Aamir and Rani's marital problems after their son's death and the love story between the pimp Nawazuddin Siddiqui and the prostitute Sheeba Chadha?
I think I've brought three plots from three different genres together in Talaash. I could've made three separate films. The challenge lay in bringing the different genres together.

Would Talaash be as big as Aamir's last blockbuster 3 Idiots?
Was I trying to equal the blockbusters?I don't know...I just hoped it did good business. For me personally there is a feeling of completeness after making Talaash. It was a film I really wanted to make. I waited five years to make Talaash.
You've effectively broken the myth that women directors make women-centric delicate and feminine films?
I am glad you can't tell the director's gender watching Talaash. Even Zoya Akhtar's films are like that. But yes, there is a disgruntled wife in my film, played by Rani. And Aamir does come close to committing adultery with Kareena, if these are traits female directors show. In the one intimate sequence that Kareena shares with Aamir she gives him something he really needs. And it's not sex. It's sleep.

A lot of viewers have questioned the way the supernatural element has been handled in Talaash?
I had several test-screenings where we screened the film to different sections of people. We left out certain scenes and added certain other portions. Based on the comments of focus groups we introduced a bit of explanation about the ending.

I even tried removing the clues about Kareena's character so that the audience would not know the truth about her before Aamir. But without those clues the denouement didn't work.

In your first film Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd too there was this supernatural element with Abhay Deol turning into Superman?
There again I was playing around with the supernatural element arguing that if couples don't have fights they must be super-heroes. I wasn't trying to convince people about the existence of super-heroes.
Talaash is being compared with various Hollywood films on the eerie theme?
People are comparing my film to The Sixth Sense. But come on, Raj Khosla's Woh Kaun Thi did it so many decades ago. To tell you the truth, I don't even believe in ghosts.

For me the ghost in Talaash is a metaphor for the unknown. When the story came to Zoya Akhtar and me the treatment was like a full-fledged horror movie. Eventually we made Talaash as a tale of a haunted hero. But he doesn't even realize he is haunted.

Some critics feel Aamir Khan's performance to be excessively reined-in?
He has very tough role. Kareena had the most charismatic presence and best lines. Aamir plays a man in a state of emotional shut-down. My brief to Aamir was to play the cop like Dr Spock in Star Trek. Completely emotion-less.

Aamir plays a character who is so emotionally shattered he can't/won't express his feelings. I think he has held the film together with his performance. There are no emotional closures and culminations to a man losing his child.

The wound remains. But by the end of the film he begins to heal. At least he begins to address the issue. That's how I had to leave Aamir's character.
Audiences and critics are raving about the impeccable casting even in the briefest parts?
It was done by Nandini Shrikent. I am so embarrassed that her vast contribution to Talaash has been eclipsed. She had done an excellent job. She kept bringing actors for every character until I was satisfied. The casting managed to give many layers through her casting.

Girls playing the prostitutes are all perfectly cast. The Madame of the brothel is played by Gulfam. She is actually a scriptwriter. I just couldn't resist casting her. As for Nawazuddion Siddiqui the minute I met him I knew he was right for the character.

The appeal of a supernatural thriller is over once the mystery is solved during the first viewing. Do you hope for a repeat audience for her film?
Oh, I think people will be go back to see my film just to see where I've screwed up, ha ha. As of now, I don't think I have screwed up except for the French manicure that Rani sports as a housewife. It's a small matter. But I should have looked at her fingernails.
Shabana Azmi feels Talaash is the first film in a long time where we actually hear the words in the songs?
Javed Uncle had worked in my first film Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd. I just had tell him the situations and he had the songs ready. The last song Lakh duniya kahe came from a sense of personal loss. Javed Uncle has lost three dear friends in the last one year. I lost my Dad.

When I went to his house and saw the lyrics I was blown. It was such a befitting finale to my film. It says what I wanted to hear. That death is not the end of a relationship. There are no simple answers to the question of life and death.

What about comparisons between Talaash to Kahaani?
I haven't seen Kahaani. I've been so busy shooting Talaash I need to catch up with my friends' films. In fact I'm doing a film festival and short-film competition in Assam with four of my filmmaker-friends' works being screened. I am definitely taking Zoya Akhtar and Anurag Kashyap. I am also going to ask Sujoy Ghosh to come along.

Box office: Talaash mints Rs.48.99 crore

Aamir Khan's Midas touch seems to be working again. The actor's suspense-thriller is raking in the moolah at the domestic box-office earning Rs.48.99 crore in the opening weekend.

Directed by Reema Kagti, the film, featuring Aamir, Rani Mukerji and Kareena Kapoor, was made at a budget of Rs.40 crore and its satellite rights were also sold for Rs.40 crore. "Talaash" released across 2,500 screens.

The film opened with rave reviews and its first weekend breakup is - Rs.14.52 crore (Friday), Rs.16.37 crore (Saturday) and Rs.18.1 crore (Sunday).

Rajesh Thadani of Multimedia Combines, Mumbai, says the response to the film is good and it is attracting more of a class audience.

"It is more for class audience rather than masses. The weekend has been very good and the movie is doing great in multiplexes as compared to single screens," Thadani told.

A lot of families are also coming to watch the suspense thriller, said Jaspal Dhingra of Nanaksar Enterprises.
"In three days, the movie has earned approximately Rs.3.75 crore in Punjab. It is a weekend-plus picture and is expected to do better. Families are coming and liking the movie," said Dhingra.

Unlike his previous films, Aamir, who is also the producer of the film along with Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, chose to keep the promotions low-key as they didn't want to ruin the suspense of the film.

And his marketing strategy seemed to have worked when it comes to attracting footfalls.

"The footfalls are exceeding and the movie has almost 80-90 percent occupancy. All age groups are coming," said Rahul Singh, senior vice president, PVR Cinemas.

However, Singh says weekdays will decide its longevity.

"The weekdays will decide how it does in future as the word of mouth spreads. Movies like 'Khiladi 786' and 'Dabangg 2' will release so we will have to wait and watch," he said.

Kiran is a hands-on mother, says Aamir

Actor Aamir Khan says his wife Kiran is a hands-on mother and is enjoying motherhood. On December 1 last year, the couple became proud parents of Azad Rao Khan

The baby was born through IVF to a surrogate mother. Aamir, whose film 'Talaash' released last Friday, says due to his work commitments he does not get to spend enough time with his son. "I am not a hands-on dad on aAamir Khan and Kiran Rao daily basis.

My responsibilities towards work don't allow me to do that. But I really like to spend time with him. He is a real joy. He is a very happy child and good natured," Aamir said. "Kiran is a hands-on mother.

She is enjoying motherhood and that's what she wants to do. Once in a while I do try and give her a break but she brushes it aside," he said. For Azad's first birthday bash, Aamir said, "On his birthday we plan to be at home with him alongwith close family members."

Meanwhile, Aamir says when it comes to films he does not consult wife Kiran, who is also a director. "No, I don't consult her. When I am not sure I like to ask her. I like to keep it as a surprise.
This she and I both consciously do. So when she watches the first cut, she is a fresh audience, she doesn't know about the script, she doesn't know what to expect. Sometimes I ask her to sit in for a narration," he said.

Move over, Aamir! Kareena gets her own Talaash success party

Kareena Kapoor is getting rave reviews for her performance in Reema Kagti's "Talaash", and husband Saif Ali Khan is planning to throw a small party to celebrate the actress' success.

"Saif is still in Lucknow shooting for his film. He is very excited as he has been receiving messages from our family and friends about my performance in 'Talaash', " Kareena told.

"He was happy about the fact that this is my first big film after our wedding and we have broken the norm to prove that even married women can get the box office going.

"Saif and I are quite thrilled about this and Saif is planning for a small party with friends and family as soon as he is back. He wants to have a small get together, now let us see how things fall in place, " she added. Kareena and Saif exchanged wedding vows last month in an intimate ceremony.
A decade after "Chameli", Kareena once again plays the role of a prostitute in "Talaash". The actress is delighted that her performance in the new film has been accepted well by the audience.

"It's quite ironic that I did 'Chameli' when I was 22 and I did 'Talaash' when I am 32. So exactly after a decade I played a prostitute's role and both my roles were accepted well by the audience, " Kareena said.

"It is easy to do song and dance, though it is a part of me and my USP, but I feel really blessed to play something like this on screen, " she added.

Salman is Kareena's top priority!

Kareena Kapoor skipped the premiere of 'Talaash' to be part of 'Bigg Boss 6'

At the premiere of Aamir Khan's latest release, Bollywood bigwigs were in full attendance to wish the very best to the film's cast and crew. However, to everyone's surprise, one of the two leading ladies of the film - Kareena Kapoor - was missing from the scene.

Buzz is that Bebo took the evening off to be able to spend time on the sets of Salman Khan's reality show, where she had gone to promote her upcoming item number from the star's film. So it was left to Aamir and his other co-star Rani Mukerji to welcome guests at the show.

A source says, It's like Kareena chose Salman's film over her own. She had promised Sallu that she would be present for his show. She kept her promise.
Another source adds, Kareena had been busy promoting the film over the last couple of days in Delhi because of which she landed up with fever and a relapse of her throat infection.

But to keep her promise, she decided to skip the premiere and go home and rest for some time before leaving for Lonavala early morning.

Movie Review: Talaash a nail-biting thriller

Star Cast : Aamir Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Kareena Kapoor, Nawazuddin Sidhiqui

Direction: Reema Kagti

Dialogues: Farhaan Akhtar

Story: Zoya Akhtar, Reema Kagti

Duration: 2 Hrs 19 Min

Rating * * * *

Undoubtedly, Aamir is one such acting titan of of Bollywood who is known for challenging the rules of conventional cinema. This time Mr Perfectionist has returned to BO with his much talked about suspense thriller, Talaash starring Rani Mukherjee, Kareena Kapoor, Nawazudin Sidhiqui and Jineet Rath.

This much awaited suspense cine tale of Aamir opened with an average occupancy of 70% at the multiplexes ( why not after all it's Mr Perfectionist prevailing legacy that precedes his movie releases).

Another key traits which precedes Aamir's style of cinematography is uniqueness of his cine concepts and his novel promotional strategies. Be it 3 Idiots or Taare Zameen Par, every time Aamir has succeeded in setting up a remarkable benchmarks, but contrary to his signature style of promotion this time he created a very conspicuous suspense around the promotions of his suspense drama, Talaash by maintaining an extremely low key affair.
Before proceeding further with the dissection of movie, let me brush aside all the rumors which stated that, Talaash is suspense thriller similar to Kahaani or is an inspired suspense slice which has borrowed its premise from a novella called "Act Of Providence". Talaash has got a thoroughly original premise drafted by Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti.

Synopsis:
Talaash is a suspense thriller with its roots embedded in the the gray lanes of Mumbai, where a cine star dies in a car crash, subsequently leading to the stepping of an investigative officer who himself is trying to maintain an equilibrium between his personal and professional world and how he comes across a a spectrum of situations, where a hooker helps him in getting the murder mystery resolved.

Story:
Talaash takes-off with the accident of cine star Armaan Kapoor (Vivan Bhatena), whose car nose dives into sea on the Sea face road of Mumbai, subsequently leading to the stepping in of Inspector Surjan Shekhawat ( Aamir Khan) for investigating the case.

As the tale proceeds, Shekhawat finds a murky case of blackmailing which may have a connection with the accident. The case turns into a life altering chase for Inspector Shekhawat, when he is forced to reel under the repercussions of a disturbed married life with his wife Roshni (Rani Mukherji) and come face to face with his suppressed grief (of loosing his son).
While being on his investigative quest, Inspector Shekhawat has a rendezvous with a hooker Rosy (Kareena Kapoor), who further adds shades of mystery to this ongoing puzzle.

With the moving ahead of investigation, things start getting complicated as investigations show many anomalies stringed to the death of the Armaan Kapoor. While investigating the case Inspector Shekhawat has a tryst with Temur (NawazuddinSiddiqui) a small time pimp who further adds to the complexity of investigation.

So did Inspector Shekhawat succeeds in revealing the mystery behind accident and manages to free himself from the demons of his past and what happens to Rosy, to find watch Talaash.

Script:
When the buzz pertaining to Talaash made it news arena, at the same time arena also got flooded with the gossip about its being a rip off of a novella called "Act Of Providence", the latest rumor that crowded the gossip aisles stated that Talaash has got a plot somewhat similar to that of Vidya Balan starrer suspense thriller Kahaani. But believe me none of the three tales share similar ground.
As far as story of Talaash is concerned then it unquestionably is one such absorbing tale which keeps you captivated through out the run time of the movie. From the very first frame it's the curiosity that takes you to a thrilling ride for next two hours. And the best feature that makes Talaash a marvelous tale is its outstanding showcasing of conspicuous secret without leaving any space for predictability.

Be it professional world of a cop or his crevice ridden personal life, everything in the movie is knitted in such an adroit manner, that it nowhere compels you to get divorced from the onscreen proceedings. The onscreen offerings of Talaash is so much attention-grabbing that it makes viewer a participant of sorts.

Whereas on rhetoric front Talassh once has got an edge, with transfixing dialogues of Farhaan Akhtar, which never get inflated to showcase the protagonists in larger than life shades.
Screenplay:
I guess nobody will have any apprehensions about the fact that when it's Mr Perfectionist Aamir on the celluloid, then everything is bound to be perfect. From the very first sequence where a luxury sedan is furiously tossed and swallowed within no time by the magnificent waters, the stupendous screenplay of the movie takes off.

In the subsequent frames things keep on getting even better. One thing which can be quoted with a firm backing is that through out the run time of the movie, Kagti has thoroughly succeeded in keeping every minutest details under the tab. From suspense inducing sequence to, nervousness and emotional unease of the protagonists, every minutest detail has got a thorough detailing attached to it.

In nutshell the marvelously fine production design and pictuarisation of Talaash is so absorbing that you don't afford to take off your gaze from the celluloid even for a moment.
Though it will be wrong to say that Talaash has got tons of on-the-edge of the seat moments, but inspite of that the dexterity with which every situation and sequence of the movie has been shot keeps on enveloping you with its thrill coefficient.

In all Reema Kagti keeps a consistent direction throughout the film, and succeeds in giving viewers a feel of assimilation with the onscreen tale. Super fine cinematography of KU Mohanan is another glittering gem in the casket of Talaash, which lends a magnificent look throughout the run time of the movie with the colours, focus and the weirdest locales of southern Mumbai.
Music and Background Score:
Despite the absence of those foot thumping numbers, music of Ram Sampath is a soothing aural delight which thoroughly compliments the theme of the movie. Tracks like Jee Ley Zara and Jiya Laage Naa very well animates the emotion of the protagonists and gets inculcated in your conscious with in no time.

Performances:
By his impeccable acting dexterity as a troubled cop-father Surjan Shekhawat, Aamir Khan has once again proved that why he is called as Mr Perfectionist of tinsel town.
