Asin is nowhere in demand

Asin struck gold at the box office with the Salman Khan starrer ‘Ready’. However, it’s strange that the filmmakers seem to have ignored her. While the producers and the directors are found queuing up at Salman’s door Asin is nowhere in demand. The actress in fact has just one film in her kitty and that too signed before ‘Ready’s release. So, it appears that her Public Relations department has failed to even try spreading rumours of her doing Vishal Bharadwaj's ‘Two States’ with Shah Rukh Khan. It’s another matter that as of today, even Shah Rukh is not keen on doing ‘Two States’. So, that project is definitely hanging fire.

Asin is nowhere in demandMoreover, a leading Mumbai producer has reportedly said that he is keen to cast Asin in his film but the actress has three things going against her. One, she is demanding to be paid as much as Kareena Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, Two, there is reportedly too much interference from her close ones. Third, though she is dependable, she brings no novelty to a project. Under these circumstances, the producer is unable to make a film offer to her. Sadly, this 25-year-old actress who is competent, pretty and has a good strike rate at the box office seems to be going nowhere!

Katrina still needs Salman in times of distress!

Katrina Kaif might have spent close to eight years in the industry, but the actress still needs to work her way from problems she lands herself into. Recently, she was charged by an institutional body for non compliance regarding a certain system of work among artists in Bollywood, when Salman Khan intervened much to the relief of our dame in distress.

Katrina still needs Salman in times of distress!Kat was sent summons from FWICE (Federation of Western India Cine Employees) and a shoot of her deodorant commercial at Mehboob Studios was halted. She is yet to fill the required forms and sign up for membership.

Apparently, it is mandatory for every working actor to be registered with the organisation. A source revealed, "Some members from the body came and stopped the shoot. They wanted to know her registration number, but since she hasn`t completed the legalities, they issued her a warning and asked her to comply with the rules. A visibly upset Kat was disturbed by the entire episode."

Calls were made and it was only when Salman personally gave assurance that she would complete the registration, did they allow the shoot to continue. Dinesh Chaturvedi, President-FWICE said, "We didn`t halt the shoot, but we wanted to know why Katrina still isn`t a member of our organisation. I understand she has a busy schedule, but it doesn`t take that long to finish the formalities. Everyone from Amitabh Bachchan to Shah Rukh Khan has registered with us."

He added, "I did get a call from Salman bhai saying that the needful will be done. I am speaking only for the benefit of the actors who aren`t registered. Since Katrina is the only big star who doesn`t have the card, we wanted to know how we could help her out."

Chaturvedi further said that the card only costs Rs 600 but has many benefits. "It gives you insurance of around two lakh, besides you can even use it during international schedules. Our organisation is working towards making life easier for the industry”, he said.

Melbourne hopes to host next Bollywood awards show

Melbourne hopes to host next Bollywood awards showToronto beat Las Vegas to become the first North American city to host the 12th annual Indian International Film Awards, which kicked off on Thursday, and now Melbourne is vying to be next.

A delegation from Australia attended the opening of the three-day Bollywood extravaganza that is expected to attract some 40,000 tourists to Canada's largest metropolis. Officials said they would inject tens of millions of dollars into the local economy for hotel rooms, food, security, venues and other expenses.

Also, Indian film crews reportedly shot scenes at Toronto's CN Tower, its ritzy Yorkville shopping district and an indoor hockey rink that will be incorporated into the three-hour awards show. "Beautiful people having fun in Toronto - that's the money shot that will be seen all over India," former Tourism Toronto executive director Duncan Ross, who spearheaded the city's bid for the IIFA show back in 2006, told AFP.

Melbourne, he said, is hoping to play host to the IIFA in 2014 or sooner. The event is designed to celebrate the popular Hindi-language film industry and win new audiences abroad. Launched in 2000 at the Millennium Dome in London, the annual IIFA awards have been held in 11 cities around the world, including Colombo, Macau, Bangkok, Dubai, Amsterdam and Johannesburg.

Tickets sold like hot cakes for this year's ceremony at the Rogers Centre in Toronto; 22,000 were snapped up within minutes of going on sale, said organiser Wizcraft International Entertainment. Canadian broadcaster Omni Rogers has signed a deal to be the first to broadcast the awards ceremony on a pay-per-view basis in Canada. It will also be packaged and broadcast next month to up to 700 million viewers worldwide.

Shahrukh Khan to perform at IIFA stage after seven years

Bollywood fans in Toronto just got luckier - superstar Shah Rukh Khan is not just attending the forthcoming International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Weekend, but he will also enthrall the audience with a befitting finale performance at the awards ceremony June 25.

Shahrukh Khan to perform at IIFA stage after seven yearsThe actor has attended two editions of the IIFA Weekend in the past - in Singapore in 2004, and Amsterdam in 2005. He had last performed in the Singapore show.

"Shah Rukh Khan will be our finale performer for this year. He is returning to perform for us after seven years, and we are very excited," Sabbas Joseph, director, Wizcraft International Entertainment, the IIFA organiser, announced at a press conference Thursday (June 16).

Shah Rukh has also been nominated in the best actor category for his performance as Rizwan Khan, a patient of Asperger's syndrome, in Karan Johar's My Name Is Khan. IIFA organisers are expecting a huge turnout of fans with Shah Rukh's presence.

"He is a phenomenal performer and a huge star. He hasn't been to Canada in a long time... so the kind of expectations that fans and people have of Shah Rukh is quite something!" Joseph told IANS.

Other performers at the star-studded event include Priyanka Chopra, Bipasha Basu, Kangana Ranaut, Saif Ali Khan and the famous Deol family - veteran star Dharmendra and his sons Sunny and Bobby.

Salman Khan is also expected to be at the three-day IIFA Weekend as his debut co-production "Chillar Party" is set to kick off the IIFA Film Festival. It would only be interesting to see a face-off between the once friends-turned-foe stars.

But whether their star power will make up for megastar Amitabh Bachchan's absence or not is yet to be seen at the weekend, set to be held June 23-25.

Lamba: “Bheja Fry 2 is a fantastic comedy”

Getting ready for an evening event in her vanity van, Minissha Lamba looked every bit excited about her upcoming movie Bheja Fry 2. Having started her career with Yahaan, she continued wooing the audience and critics alike with her performances in Bachna Ae Haseeno, Honeymoon Travels Private Limited and Well Done Abba.

Minissha Lamba: “Bheja Fry 2 is a fantastic comedy”Director Sagar Ballary, with whom she worked first in Hum, Tum aur Shabana was highly impressed with her work, which is why he cast her in his next movie Bheja Fry 2. Bheja Fry was highly liked by all and there’s no doubt that that those involved with the sequel have a lot to live up to. So what are Minissha’s hopes and expectations from this movie?

I will start with the obvious. What made you say yes to Bheja Fry 2?

I loved Bheja Fry and it was a great movie. So, of course when a sequel is getting made and you are offered the sequel it’s the most natural thing that you would want to be a part of it.

Tell us something about the character you are playing in this movie.

I play the role of an Executive Producer on a reality show and the whole plot of the film starts from there. So, we introduce Bharat Bhushan’s character through the reality show and how because of this show, the plot goes forward. You have a completely new episode, new situations where Bharat Bhushan bheja fries everyone!

Bheja Fry was a big hit with critics and audience alike. So do you think there is a lot of pressure because of the expectations from the sequel?

You know, the pressure’s always there. Especially since people loved the first film. But, you know, I feel very lucky. I have got a very talented director Sagar Ballary who teamed up with a producer like Mukul Deora both who understand what the film requires, understands the requirement of the sequel and how from making Bheja Fry 1 to making Bheja Fry 2, it is a product that is worthy of a sequel. We really collaborated and worked very hard to make the script something that is modern, very today, yet something that is different from the first but keeping the essence of Bheja Fry as a story and as a character of Bharat Bhushan the same.

This is your second movie with director Sagar…

(smiles)Yes.

So tell us how was it working with him; how is he on the sets as a director?

It was superb working with him. I think a director has to be a combination of everything. It’s a film shoot at the end of the day, you know…so we can’t have ‘fun’ directors and you can’t have very strict ‘directors’. A director’s like a paternal figure, he’s loving, he’s caring, he can be strict; he has to know how to get his work out of you and Sagar has been like that. He has been the big brother, he has been a father figure to a lot of people on sets whom he has guided and mentored.

Tell us something about the music of the movie.

Bheja Fry is not essentially a music driven film. But still that doesn’t mean that it is devoid of music. It has some fantastic songs; a fantastic track which is a part of the soundtrack of the film, but not as part of the film as far as the running is concerned. You won’t see a song in the film.

What was the best thing about being a part of Bheja Fry 2?

I think the best part about being involved with Bheja Fry 2 was that we got to shoot on a ship because I have never got to be on a ship before and the killer excuse of being stranded on the ship for two whole weeks! We used to stop at different places every single day and it was beautiful. The ship experience is like fabulous!

Bheja Fry is almost synonymous with Vinay Pathak…

Yes!

So how was it working with him?

He is a fantastic bundle of energy! The kind of performances that he does as a comedian is very physical comedy and it’s very difficult. For him to be up as his character Bharat Bhushan is not only something which you require a lot of talent for, which he has, but you also require great energy for. He is always alert. He has this most charming, beautiful grey eyes that is something one would look very deeply into!

Any particular incident on the sets which comes to your mind right now?

Loads of them! The fact that we have so many actors aboard meant that we would have great sessions of dumb charades, sessions of Pictionary together…so it felt really good that you could play games like in your childhood and we would actually become children..screaming and fighting and you know all of that. So it was fun.

What are the first three words that come to your mind when one says Bheja Fry?

Bheja Fry…uhh…(laughing) this heat of Bombay…Bheja Fry for me can only mean the movie Bheja Fry and nothing else!

So is there anything which makes Minissha’s Bheja Fry?

I get very irritated when you have an address in front of you and you cannot find it and you are running around in circles and every other house or building number can be located except the one you are looking for. That really fries my brain! Really! Ya!

Why should the audience come and watch Bheja Fry 2 ?

Bheja Fry 1 is reason enough. Also it’s a fantastic comedy and I can vouch for that because I only sign films which I believe in and which I believe is a value for money for audience.

Your upcoming projects…

I have another romantic movie by Sagar – Hum, Tum aur Shabana – and Shirish Kunder’s Joker.

Bheja Fry 2 is in theaters this Friday June 17th, be sure to check it out!

Mahesh Bhatt: Jacqueline is even Hotter than Bipasha, Mallika

Mahesh Bhatt, the brain behind Murder and its sequel, admits that Jacqueline is bolder than Jism’s Bipasha Basu and Murder’s Mallika Sherawat. Says he, “We at Vishesh Films decided to make films with a high quotient of erotica to cater to the new consumer who is living a life radically different from the life I lived in my youth. “Bollywood cinema was slow to realise this but society had moved on. That is why when we made Jism and Murder and Raaz, the audience lapped it up. They had no problems with it. But the purists were outraged.

Mahesh Bhatt: Jacqueline is even Hotter than Bipasha, Mallika“For the first time in Indian cinema, Bipasha uttered the words, “the body doesn’t know love, it only knows lust.” Then we had Mallika in Murder who sleeps with another man and returns to her marriage only because her affair isn’t working out. She has an intensely fulfilling sexual extra-marital relationship and feels no guilt. This is the post modern Indian woman.

“The India in which we were groomed, was shackled to certain beliefs. In the cinema made by our predecessors — Raj Kapoor and Raj Khosla — we were invariably shown that good people fell in love while bad people had sex.

“For me, the eye-opener came when I saw Jism in Delhi and found 70 per cent of the audience comprised of rich women. It was not just being viewed by sex-hungry frontbenchers but also by an evolved upmarket audience. “Raaz was simply the precursor. With Murder 2, women have gone one step further. Jacqueline is a different animal from Mallika and Bipasha. While they sinned with their eyes open but still yearned to conform towards the end; for Murder 2’s Jackie, sex is even more casual. The director of Ra One, Abhinay Deo was pretty upset with the lyrics of the song and stated that it is likely to have a wrong impact on children.

He is even shocked as to how can a responsible producer like Aamir Khan include such a song in his upcoming home production Delhi Belly starring his nephew Imran Khan in the lead role.

Kiran further added that the lyric of the song is funny and it talks about a loser who is not lucky enough. The filmmakers had no intention of hurting anybody.

If one has a problem with the lyrics of the song he/she better not listen to it. Delhi Belly is a bold film.

Kapoor: Ranaut is very stylish

Sonam Kapoor: Kangna Ranaut is very stylishThursday was Sonam Kapoor’s birthday and like the professional actress she is, she spent the day shooting for Mausam, her upcoming film opposite Shahid Kapoor. About any chances of her being linked with Shahid, Sonam says, “Thankfully, I haven't been linked with him. I am very fond of Shahid. He’s a dear friend and a great co-star and whichever girl he ends up with will be very lucky.

Sonam’s just back from Cannes and she says that the Red Carpet experience was awesome, but when asked about foraying into Hollywood, she says, “It depends. I have always felt that it doesn’t matter what language the film is in, it depends on the role I am offered, the project, the director and the story. Of course, I would love to do something with a brilliant director.”

Recently chosen as the face of the India International Jewellery Week, we ask what jewellery means to her. “Jewellery making is an art form, there is a lot of creativity involved and it’s an excellent investment. I love emeralds, rubies, sapphires, everything. But there is a certain classic quality to diamonds and that will always be in,” she says, adding that her father Anil Kapoor is not very good when it comes to buying jewellery.

Given the few films she has done, Sonam is already in the big league when it comes it endorsements. She, however, says, “I am doing enough for myself. It is better to concentrate on a few (products) which have quality. I have always decided to endorse the best.”

When asked about which Bollywood heroine, according to her, was the most fashionable, she says, “Karishma Kapoor and Twinkle Khanna are on my list of very fashionable people. I also find Kangana Ranaut very stylish.”

Ready for more

A two-year gap is huge, especially when there are youngsters clamouring to be part of Bollywood. But trust Asin to get back in the reckoning in style. Busy with the promotions of Ready (remake of the Telugu film Ready) with Salman Khan, the effervescent actor is packing her bags for a month-and-a-half stay in London for her film Housefull 2 opposite Akshay Kumar and is also bracing herself to face Shah Rukh Khan in the film adaptation of Chetan Bhagat's “2 States.” Ask her if she is all set to pull out one ace after another in Bollywood, and she says, “I just feel happy and blessed that I am working with actors of such repute. First Salman and next up is my film with Akshay. Not just that, the banners I am working with are also huge. As for 2 States, I wouldn't like to comment.”

Asin Ready for moreA picture of confidence, Asin knows now is the time to make up for her last film's dismal box office report. Bollywood's been a mixed bag; while Ghajini made a huge impact, the big-budgeted London Dreams didn't fire anybody's imagination and, except for television commercials, the actor has not been seen in a single movie since 2009. Does she regret the decision to move to the Hindi film industry when she was at her peak in Tamil films? “I think it was a good decision,” reiterates Asin. “But it isn't like people think; I hadn't planned my move to Bollywood, though I will agree that the scope of reaching out to a larger audience exists in the Hindi film industry. I was approached by the producers who were thinking of remaking Ghajini and I saw no harm in being part of this wonderful team,” says the actor, denying any ambition of shifting to Mumbai for work then.

“I'd like to believe I am an actor of Indian cinema, and I have a soft spot for cinema in the South as it gave me the opportunity to explore myself as an actor,” she says, when asked about her plans to continue in southern films. “I have a lot of offers coming in for Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam films, but I seriously think I should choose with care. I have done several films in the South and don't want to repeat myself. The day I get something new and exciting, I will sign it,” she says, adding she hasn't currently green lighted any regional project.

Despite the failure of London Dreams, she has got another chance to work opposite Salman. An opportunity any other actor would have given her right arm for? Asin chuckles, “Having worked with Salman twice, I can say I am armless!” Speaking about her co-star, she says, “As an actor, Salman is a challenge to work with because he throws anything at you once the camera rolls. You have to think on your feet and be ready for anything, he is that spontaneous. As a person, Salman is absolutely unpretentious. It's difficult to believe that a person like this exists in the world of showbiz.” In Ready, Asin plays Sanjana (essayed by Genelia D'Souza in the original) who falls in love with Prem (Salman) and has to fend off the greedy intentions of some of her relatives who are eyeing her wealth. The focus is clearly on Salman in this one, with Asin admitting that the Telugu script has been tweaked to not only suit North Indian sensibilities but also Salman's superstar status. Doesn't it make her insecure that consequently the hero is hogging the limelight when it comes to promotions? “It's a reflection of our male-dominated society. A commercial format naturally focusses on the hero. I have no problems with that. I am happy with the space I am occupying. Also I think that as a superstar, Salman deserves every bit of the adoration and space he is getting.”

The actor says she hasn't been influenced in the least by Genelia's portrayal of Sanjana. “I had watched the original film casually even before I was approached to do it. I have followed Anees Bazmee's (director, Ready) vision of the story and the character.”

Stories abound in tinsel town that Asin's refusal to wear revealing clothes and be part of intimate scenes is proving to be a hindrance to her career. Ask her about it, and her reply is straightforward. “I am not aware of this but at the same time I am comfortable only in a certain setup. There is a thin line dividing the aesthetic and the vulgar. I will do only what I am comfortable with. As for intimate scenes, nobody has yet approached me for any such so that's merely speculation. My career will run with or without such support,” she asserts.

Kanika Dhillon: Shahrukh Khan nurtures young talent

Kanika Dhillon: Shahrukh Khan nurtures young talentShe is 28, has written a book, is a London School of Economics (LSE) alumnus and has penned the screenplay and dialogues of Shah Rukh Khan's RA.One, touted to be Bollywood's costliest film. Kanika Dhillon, the creative content head of Shah Rukh's Red Chillies Entertainment, says the star is among the few producers in Bollywood who nurture young talent. "When I came to work in Mumbai, I knew I wanted to work with Shah Rukh Khan. Look at what he's done, where he's come from...and what he is today. His success story is a fable!," Dhillon, originally from Amritsar, told.

"He is among the few people who nurture young talent in the industry, without looking at the background, the experience, age and other such things. He is one of those few who is so clued in with what the younger generation likes and dislikes...and that's what makes him what he is!" she added.

Dhillon is ready to launch her first novel "Bombay Duck Is A Fish" on Monday. The book traces the journey of small-town girl Neki Brar, who like countless other starstruck people, leaves her cushy corporate job and comes to Mumbai to make it big as a Bollywood filmmaker. And like many, Neki too is enamoured of King Khan. Neki's story is quite similar to Dhillon's. A well-read girl, who graduated from Delhi University's St.Stephen's College, she went on to study at LSE with a major in media and communication for the sake of her parents, for whom her filmmaking ambitions were an "embarrassment".

But Dhillon, who started her Bollywood stint as an assistant director of Farah Khan's Om Shanti Om, clarifies that her book is only 30 percent of her own life. "My book doesn't capture how Bollywood works. It captures the human emotions behind wanting to meet your own destiny. It is a human story about passion, love, faith, betrayal, success and all those emotions that one comes across in the path of achieving their dreams," she said.

With Shah Rukh portrayed as a phenomenon in her book, it was only appropriate that she wanted the superstar to unveil the book. And Dhillon is more than glad that he agreed without hesitation. "I have been working with Shah Rukh for five years. But the feeling was fantastic when he said yes to launching my book. It was a big news for me. For two days, I couldn't believe he would launch my book, but he has been very encouraging on every platform," said Dhillon.

"If people feel that reading my book turns out to be a good visual experience, I would love to turn it into a screenplay. But it depends on how well it is received," she added. Film direction is also on Dhillon's mind - who feels it is a "natural progression" for anyone passionate about filmmaking. For now, however, she is looking forward to the launch of her book and the release of Ra.One, in which she has given some heartwarming dialogues like "Some superheroes wear a mask, this one wears a heart". Dhillon has also started to write her next book "Kalma" - a true story of a Muslim girl.
